For me, this would be Nik from the #DawnsBlood series.

She is bisexual and biromantic.

I only talk about Nik on occasion, but she is a powerful electromancer who has joined a rebellion against a powerful queen who imprisoned her for years.

And also used to be her lover...

September 23rd – tumble

Av’ry has some questions about the masked stranger that broke them out of prison.

He’s not really prepared for the answer.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“If you really are who you say you are, let me take a look. Then, I’ll believe you.”
“That’s going to be complicated, too.” The woman rubbed the back of her neck.
“Alright, that’s it.” Av’ry turned to leave, motioning for Mikiva to follow. “I’m not sure what you are playing at; maybe I don’t want to know. But I do know you are lying to me, and I am tired of being toyed with. Let’s go, Mikiva.”
He took two steps back towards the door before she called after them.
	“Wait!”
Av’ry paused but didn’t turn back.
“I’ll take off the mask,” she relented.
“That’s a start.” He turned back expectantly.
	“Just, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
With a sigh, the woman reached her fingers up under the fabric of the mask and tore it off. A tumble of copper-colored hair spilled from under the hood, falling to her shoulders.
The redhead regarded him with a crooked smile. “Hey Ave, it’s been a long time.”

#DawnsBlood is a multi POV story.

Av'ry, Fox, and Mikiva get the majority of the POV time, usually depending on whose feelings are most important in the scene or who gets the most interesting moments.

Sometimes it depends on if I want to keep something a secret for now. 🤫

September 21st – Stream

Fox is about to make a deal that she might end up regretting.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

There was no crackling fire this time. No high-backed chairs or cozy cottage, or mugs of tea. She was making contact this time and, as a result, there was nothing but a voice calling out into an endless void.
This was the way most mages connected in the Stream. Fox wasn’t sure how redacted was able to physically manifest himself in dreams, to craft and shape them like he did. That was power that was supposed to be reserved for gods. Apparently, redacted could do it, too.
Either way, she didn’t need anything so fancy, she just had to make contact. She had reached out to him and now all she could do was wait for a reply. Hopefully, it would be quick. She likely didn’t have much time. K’ivin knew she had been communicating like this, and he wouldn’t allow it to continue when he returned to question her. If she didn’t get this done before then, she might not get another chance.
Finally, she felt the now familiar touch of his mind as he made the connection. “Taevyn Fox. I am pleasantly surprised to hear from you so soon. To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“You should already know. You set all of this in motion. Or are you simply surprised that I am still alive?”

September 20th – signal

Av’ry and Fox have been separated for a while.

Av’ry is about to find out what she’s been up to.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“The full explanation is going to have to wait. I need you to trust me, just a little bit longer.”
“You are really stretching the limits on that, Fox.”
“I know, and I’m sorry. Did you bring explosives? And the sword?” She changed the subject.
“I did.” Av’ry nodded. “Picked up my things before I followed you. I wasn’t just going to wander out into the wilderness with no supplies or weapons. And I figured you mentioned that blade for a reason.”
“Good. Did you see the mountain on your way in?”
“How, exactly, could I miss a mountain?”
Fox ignored his sarcasm. “We need to collapse the entrance to a small cave there. You have enough to do that?”
“I should. I’ll need to prepare it, though. You going to tell me what this is about?” he pressed.
“Tomorrow. I promise. Just get it ready. When it is time, I’ll signal you. Come find me and we’ll do what I came here for. Don’t forget the sword.”
“Alright. But just so we understand each other, this is the last thing I do on faith, Fox.”
“Don’t worry. It will all be pretty obvious once we get there. And if we survive it, I’ll answer anything you ask.”

September 19th – tube

Av’ry and Fox are exploring an old draconic ruin.

And Av’ry can never resist teasing Fox a bit.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“No time to waste, then. How’s your climbing these days, Ave?” Fox asked.
He spit on his hands and moved out to the edge of the chasm. “Worry about the rope, not me. Think it’s long enough?”
	“It had better be.”
Setting down the torch and reaching into his bag, Av’ry extracted another tube, cracking it to release the chemiluminescent glow. He shook it vigorously, then hooked it to his belt.
“I guess there is only one way to find out.” Dangling his legs over the chasm, Av’ry wrapped the coil around one leg to take his weight and slid over the edge.
	“Hey, wait, let me…”
“You don’t always get to go first, Fox. And I am the one with the light.”
“Fine.” She chewed the corner of her lip. “Shout when you reach the next level.”
“Of course. And I’ll scream if I fall. So, either way you’ll know.”
Fox scowled at him. “Just hurry up.”

September 18th – payment

K’allon has something he wants to discuss with Nik, but he is hesitating.

He has good reason. It might be lightly…treasonous.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

She broke the seal and pulled the cork out of the bottle of amber liquid; she took a swig and passed it over to K’allon.
“Where did you get a bottle of 20-year-old whiskey?” He inspected the label.
“Won it in a card game.” Nik shrugged.
“Oh, well as long as it isn’t costing you anything.” He took a long pull from the bottle before passing it back.
“Not a thing,” she confirmed. “And don’t worry, I can win another. Your people are all terrible at cards.”
“You don’t feel guilty, taking their money?”
“I consider it payment for my services as a teacher.” She laughed. “They’ll either get better or learn not to gamble. Both valuable lessons.”
K’allon rolled his eyes, but he laughed too.
“Sound reasoning.” He took the bottle back. “This is good stuff.”
Nik nodded. At least he was talking, even if it was about something of no consequence.

September 17th – effort

Fox has made a new friend. I’m sure this is fine…

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

It wasn’t cold this time. In fact, she wasn’t even outdoors. The cabin was sparsely furnished, but comfortable and a cheerful fire burned in the hearth. Fox watched the wood crackle and pop, sending sparks swirling up the chimney.
“You have better attention to detail, this time,” she observed, sinking into a highbacked chair by the fire. It was soft and smelled of fresh leather.
“It strengthens the illusion and the connection. The more energy you expend in creating something, the harder it is to unmake.” redacted smiled languidly. “Our previous encounters were merely invitations. Now we are forging a relationship. This is important.”
“Well, I admit that I am intrigued you find me worth the effort.”
“Of course, my dear. I couldn’t simply leave things as they were when last we met, now could I? You were so… cold.”
“Really?” Fox laughed mirthlessly. “I must say, puns I was not expecting.”
“Once you get to know me, you will find that I am not at all what you expect me to be.”

September 16th – call

Nik and T’orrin have escaped a bandit encampment.

Nik just learned he is an exiled prince.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“I… but you are a…you know?”
“Mage? Yes, I am aware of that. But I have been stripped of almost all my power. If I use too much, I could end up a comatose puppet again. I need to be careful until I can figure out what my limits are. Besides, we escaped, so what are you complaining about?”
T’orrin took a deep breath. “You’re right. I am being very uncharitable. We wouldn’t have gotten out at all, if it weren’t for you. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Nik was surprised by his sincerity. “Let’s just get to the rebels before anyone else recognizes one, or both, of us. You still think we can reach your brother’s group today?”
“We should be able to, if we ride hard and don’t stop to rest. Shouldn’t be a problem, since the bandits got our food, so we don’t have much reason to stop anyway.”
“Well, lead the way, highness.” She chuckled to herself.
	“Please don’t call me that.”
	“Very well, my prince.”
	“Ugh, let’s just go.”

I like to think most of my protagonists won't inspire punching. Maybe a solid shake to get them to make better choices, but hopefully no punching.

So, villains it is! I think Queen Istaria from #DawnsBlood is quite punchable at times. Especially at a few key moments I won't spoil.

September 15th – exterior

Mikiva and Av’ry have to trust a stranger to break them out of prison.

They have some concerns with her plan.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

As the trio made their way slowly down the narrow, stone passageway, Mikiva marveled at the maze-like nature of the fort. Even if she had managed to escape, she could have been lost for days.
The woman leading them seemed to know her way though, because she never hesitated. It wasn’t long before they reached one of the exterior doors. However, just as she had promised, it was guarded.
Peering around the corner, their hooded rescuer signaled for them to stop. “Take the keys and wait here. I will draw his attention. Once I have, go out through that door. There will be a stand of trees straight ahead, about 200 meters away. Take cover there and wait for me. I will catch up with you, and we will continue from there. Understand?”
She rose and was about to step out, when Av’ry suddenly grabbed her arm.
“That isn’t just a guard. The man is a mage,” he whispered. “How are you planning to escape?”
“Let me worry about that. Just do as you are told.”

September 14th – month

Nik has some advice for her new second-in-command.

They are still establishing their working relationship.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“I feel the need to protect my people…” J’ossu began.
“I know, I have heard all the justifications before. It is a common trait in military commanders.” Nik rolled her eyes. “They think that if they maintain constant vigilance, constant control, they can keep bad things from happening. To them, to their team, to their family. It doesn’t work, and it only drives everyone around them crazy.
“You need to pass responsibility on to others for many reasons. For your own sanity, for theirs, so that they can learn, grow, gain the respect of the troops, teach you things you didn’t think of.” She ticked off points on her fingers. “Find someone promising, make them your second, and show them you trust them by allowing them control while you take regular nights off.”
“I will, as soon as our situation is not so urgent.”
“Our current urgency is long term, J’oss. It could last for months; it could last for years. You can’t live your whole life like you are in the middle of a pitched battle. The human body is not designed for it. For the time being, as important as everything is, as urgent as everything is, this is just regular life. You have to live it like it is. Know what I mean?”

September 13th – distract

Fox and Av’ry plan to kill…something.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“With any luck, this will incapacitate him while we escape.”
	“And if it doesn’t?”
“I don’t think he knows you are here. I’ll distract him. You make a run for it,” Fox replied.
	“Hard pass on that option.”
	“Someone needs to warn people.”
“As if anyone would believe this,” Av’ry scoffed.
“We don’t have time to argue. I think I am ready to do this.”
Fox rose and approached the body. She lay her hand on the barrier, above the chest. It pulsed under her palm.
“The heart should be right about here.” She gestured. “When I pierce the protection, you sense the gap and plunge the sword in as deep as you can. Twist it around a bit, then pull it all the way out. We need to make sure it bleeds out quickly. Are the charges set?”
Av’ry lay the fast-burning fuse by his feet and nodded.
	“Then let’s do this, before…”
Shouts from outside echoed through the cave. They were too distorted to understand the words, but the tone was clear: alarm.
“Damn, that was faster than I hoped. Do it, Ave. Light the fuse then get in position with the sword. We are out of time.”

The antagonist from #DawnsBlood is discovering that good help is hard to find. So hard, in fact, that he might make a...dubious strategic choice in order to get some.

September 12th – wedge

There aren’t really supposed to be any dragons left in the world. So, Av’ry is a bit surprised.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“He wasn’t lying,” he croaked at last.
“No. No, he was not. Though I have wished many times that he was.” Fox wedged the torch into a bracket on the wall.
For his part, Av’ry couldn’t tear his eyes away from the center of the room. Perhaps that wasn’t surprising; it was, after all, the first living dragon he had ever seen. Though ‘living’ might have been a generous description.
The creature lay curled, as if sleeping, its long tail wrapped almost protectively around its body, its wings flat against it like a membranous blanket. Its neck was twisted around to let its head rest on the back in a way that reminded him of a swan.
The size was about the same as Sylivyth’s corpse, but the coloration was entirely different. Far from the pearlescent gleam of that dragon’s scales, this creature was a vivid, almost violent, red that made it hard to look at. A splash of magenta painted its throat, and its darker wings were veined with black so deep they seemed to absorb the light from the torch.

September 11th – exhaust

Fox has perhaps been avoiding sleep for a reason…

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Fox wasn’t sure how much time passed, gazing into the dark, before a branch snapping off to her left startled her from her reverie. She spun to face it, hand on her weapon.
“Easy there.” Av’ry stepped into the circle of firelight, “I come in peace.”
“What are you doing out here, Ave?” Fox relaxed. “I thought I told you to get some rest.”
“I did. I slept for a few hours, now it’s your turn. Go on, this is my watch.”
“Look, you really don’t have to, I’m not…”
He raised a hand to stop her. “Come on Fox, don’t lie to me again. I appreciated the gesture the first time, but if you keep it up, I am going to be offended. You are clearly exhausted.”
“Alright, alright.” She raised her hands, surrendering. “I know when I’m beat. I’ll go get some rest. Don’t let me sleep too long, though. We should get back to it early.”
“Deal. Now, get out of here.”
Fox chuckled to herself as she slipped into her tent. Reluctantly, she lay down and drifted off to sleep.
	Almost immediately, she regretted it.

September 10th – teeth

Nik might be T’orrin’s bodyguard at the moment, but she might also be open to a better offer.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

T’orrin flinched as if he’d been struck. “I am not my brother, and this…”
“Hush boy. If you shut your mouth and eat your meal, you will probably survive until the ransom comes. This has nothing to do with you.”
	“But I…”
D’orril turned the knife in his hand and plunged it forcefully into a hunk of meat, spearing it to the wooden table. T’orrin wisely fell silent.
“As I was saying.” The bandit pulled the knife from the table and took a bite of the morsel. “Why shouldn’t we use our skills? Why shouldn’t we have a taste of the good life?”
“Just a taste?” Nik sat next to him on the bench, brushing his arm as she did. “Why should I risk what I already have, for just a taste?”
	“You are hoping for more?”
	“I always want more.”
“I don’t know,” he smiled, grabbing a grape from the table, “there is a lot I’d risk for just a taste.”
Before he could eat, Nik reached over and plucked it from his hand. “Prove it.”
She placed the grape gingerly between her teeth and turned back to him, a saucy smile on her face.

September 9th – rig

Av’ry has an idea! Fox isn’t so sure about it.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“I’ve been thinking that maybe those problems could solve each other,” Av’ry mused.
“How, exactly?” Fox raised an eyebrow.
“It was that ‘key’ we rigged up, for the dragon’s door, that gave me the idea. The way we stored your power. Maybe we could work out a way to do the same, but to a greater extent. Instead of you just dumping power, wasting it, we could siphon off the excess and store it for…later use.”
“That key was pretty weak, though. I’m not sure we could store enough to be useful.”
“Maybe not, but what’s the harm in trying? If we pool our talents, practice a bit, I think we could pull it off.”
Fox considered that a moment. “The difference in scale from the key to what you are describing…it isn’t comparable. You could get hurt trying this.”
“So, we start slowly. We learn to control it together.” As she squinted to make out his face in the watery grey light of dawn, his eyes were pleading. “I know it is risky. But if I can’t stop you, at least let me help you. Let me try. Please?”

September 8th – mental

Av’ry has a chat with an Ynthessen citizen about why he’s there, in the hidden city.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“See? No one has given me that answer before.”
	“Really?’
“Nope. Politics is a new one. It isn’t the first thing most people think of. Must be on your mind.”
Av’ry began to make a mental inventory of all the people who wanted him dead at the moment, but gave up when it started to get depressing.
	“You could say that.”
Alessa laughed. “Well, it’s lucky that you can hide out down here awhile, then.”
“So it would seem.” He drained his glass.
“Ok, next question.” She topped them both up from the bottle. “Favorite food.”
	“Algae paste.”
	“You’re messing with me.”
“Oh, very much so. You don’t even want to know how terrible it is compared to real food.” He grimaced. “Do you ever trade for meat?”
“No. We try to be pretty self-sufficient down here. Our scouts only barter for things we can’t make ourselves or do without. Meat is unnecessary, we have algae, and fungi.”

September 6th – sigh

Nik is training mage killers.

Or she’s trying to, anyway. They have a ways to go.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Nik closed her eyes and leaned her head back, enjoying the cool breeze on her skin and the sun on her face. In the stillness, she heard the crunch of leaves behind her and the scrape of a boot across the grass.
Eyes still closed, the air crackled with electricity, and then she heard 5 bodies hit the ground.
Nik opened her eyes with a sigh. “You are going to have to do better than that.” She looked down at the soldiers arrayed around her, groaning and trying to regain their feet. “I told you, it isn’t enough just to wait until I seem distracted. You need to actively draw my attention away from the attack. Distract, then look for an opening. Get yourselves together and try it again.”
Nik turned away from them, giving them time to recover. “And you,” She shook her head at J’ossu standing in startled stillness behind her, “probably shouldn’t sneak up on me during training. You are lucky I was only targeting those five.”
J’ossu raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t actually expect to find you out here this morning.”
	“Why not?”
