"By the end of WW1, Los Angeles engineers were already searching for an additional water source as the city’s population continued to grow."

"Water & Los Angeles: A Tale of Three Rivers, 1900–1941" via @ucpress.bsky.social: www.ucpress.edu/books/water-... #waterhistory #westernwater #coloradoriver

A paragraph from the book “Water & Los Angeles: A Tale of Three Rivers, 1900–1941” reads:

The Colorado River

By the end of World War I, Los Angeles engineers were already searching for an additional water source as the city’s population continued to grow. They joined with the U.S. Reclamation Service to build a high dam (Boulder Dam, or Boulder Canyon Dam, renamed Hoover Dam) on the Colorado River to store water and provide for flood control, the generation of electrical power, and several other purposes. The effort resulted in the 1922 agreement between the federal government and the seven states bordering the Colorado River to share the water for agricultural, residential, and industrial use and to compete for the hydroelectric power produced at the dam. Boosters in all of these states were interested in protecting their natural resources for use in future growth. Soon Los Angeles emerged as the leading force in the West to bring the project to fruition and obtain much of the water and resulting hydroelectricity for itself. The blue-tinted cover of the book “Water & Los Angeles: A Tale of Three Rivers, 1900–1941”, written by William Deverell and Tom Sitton, shows the 1913 photo of opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

First stop to greet us in Arizona: Glen Canyon Bridge. Then it was off to Horseshoe Bend for THAT view.

The Colorado River wrapping almost completely around that massive sandstone formation is even more impressive in person.

Glen Canyon Bridge spanning a deep red sandstone gorge near Glen Canyon Dam. The large steel arch and roadway cross the canyon beneath a blue sky streaked with thin white clouds.Wide view of Horseshoe Bend, where the dark green Colorado River makes a dramatic horseshoe-shaped curve around a massive red sandstone formation. Towering canyon walls surround the river beneath a vivid blue and partly cloudy sky.A cluster of white trumpet-shaped desert flowers growing from dark green leaves in the red, rocky soil near Horseshoe Bend. Sparse shrubs and an enormous open desert landscape stretch toward distant mesas behind them.Expansive panoramic view of the Arizona desert near Horseshoe Bend, with reddish terrain dotted by low shrubs stretching toward distant mesas. A huge blue sky filled with wispy high clouds and puffy white clouds dominates the scene.
