At 620 meters on a flat granite summit above Wintzenheim, Château du Hohlandsbourg takes in Colmar, the Rhine plain, the Munster valley and the Black Forest in one turn. Siegfried de Gundolsheim raised it for the Habsburgs from 1279. Two replies below. #Castles #History

Count the chimneys. There are 55 at Cecilienhof Palace, each laid in a different brickwork pattern, around 176 rooms and five courtyards. The Hohenzollerns finished it in 1917, while the empire that ordered it bled out. See if you can find two that match. #Castles #History

Shadowed by the fame of Neuschwanstein Castle, many tourists skip visiting Hohenschwangau Castle. For the life of me, I can't understand why.

Built mainly in the 15th century, Hohes Schloss served as the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. The castle is known for its distinctive white walls, red roofs, and colourful Gothic façade paintings. Situated above the old town, Hohes Schloss offers views over Füssen and the surrounding Allgäu landscape, with the Alps rising dramatically behind it. Photographer: @ervik.de

In 1308 Jacques de Molay and the Templar leadership were locked in the Coudray Tower at Château de Chinon. The parchment absolving them stayed lost in the Vatican until 2001. It saved nobody. Follow for the rest of the Loire fortresses. #Castles #History

Sophie Charlotte died in 1705, aged 36. Her widower renamed the house and the town after her. Charlottenburg Palace began as her Lietzenburg villa in 1695, burned in November 1943, and came back from the 1950s. Send this to whoever owes you a Berlin trip. #Castles #History

The first thing to do on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), England is to walk to the castle which is the island’s main landmark. The castle (known as Lindisfarne Castle) was built in 1550 & has stunning scenery & sea views around it.

Louis XIV did not demolish Nicolas Fouquet's château. He jailed the man and took his three designers. Le Vau, Le Brun and Le Nôtre left Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte and built Versailles from ideas tested here first. Watch it before Versailles takes the credit. #Castles #History

July 24, 1284: Albrecht von Lewenstein, eldest illegitimate son of King Rudolf I, married in Basel. Liebenstein Castle followed, and the von Preuschen family has held it since 1783. The Rhine Romantics never touched it. Which Middle Rhine castle should we cover next? #Castles #History

Cawdor Castle's architecture appears younger than it is, but I noticed a gilt-decorated coat of arms dated 1672. However, it is believed to have been built around a legendary holly tree 600 years ago.

Friedrich Wilhelm IV planned a triumphal way nearly two kilometers long through Potsdam. Two pieces got built. One is the Orangery Palace, about 304 meters end to end, still the longest building in Sanssouci Park. Save it for a Potsdam day that skips Sanssouci Palace. #Castles #History

Four centuries as the southernmost fortress of the kingdom of France, at 697 meters on the Mont Ardu. Château de Puilaurens gets called a Cathar castle, but Louis IX's masons erased almost everything older after 1255. Almost none of it is Cathar. Read why. #Castles #History

The photo shows a view of Stirling Castle in Scotland, framed through a large stone archway. The composition highlights the contrast between the dark, textured stone of the foreground arch and the bright, sunny landscape beyond it.

Château de Termes held Simon de Montfort off from August into November 1210. The cisterns ran dry, a downpour refilled them, and the standing water turned foul. Dysentery emptied the walls that the siege could not. Bring your own water if you go up. #Castles #History
