I see everyone agreeing that the seduction scene is funny but I don't understand why. Where in this whole movie is he giving off consenting adult vibes? Aren't they just punctuating that he has the mentality and emotional level of a child by playing Mr Rogers in the background? #BeingThere #TCMParty

There are several ways it can be interpreted. It could be as simple as his not realizing he SHOULDN'T be able to do that, like a cartoon character running off a cliff, hanging in mid-air. Another is that everybody else's belief in him as their guiding light has become manifest. #TCMParty #BeingThere

Yes. The comedic timing is unusual because his character is so flat and so slow, and the other characters have to be slow in response

Children who experience any sort of neglect, which is equivalent to abuse in its effect, definitely wouldn't have found this nearly so charming. #BeingThere #TCMParty

Peter Sellers thought that showing that blooper compilation over the End Credits cost him the Oscar.

How many relationships are there in the real world that are like that? Perhaps far more than we think... #TCMParty #BeingThere

So what do you think his his walking on water is supposed to mean??? #TCMParty #BeingThere

@celluloidsoul.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 4:13 AM

Yes but he can't have a real relationship with any of them because they still don't even see him. #BeingThere #TCMParty

The scripted-and-shot original ending has Eve lead Chance back to the funeral after he leaves his umbrella over a tree that needs shelter. Obvious symbolism there. But Hal Ashby figured audiences would at this point believe something a little more fantastical... #TCMParty #BeingThere

It's also slow because his character's slowness requires it. He can't give this performance of his characterization any faster. #BeingThere #TCMParty

There is that intriguing, if sad, hint that he is capable of growth here. He wasn't affected much when the Old Man (who in the book is pretty much confirmed as his ashamed father) died. He's only known these people a few days...but. #BeingThere #TCMParty

@celluloidsoul.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 4:07 AM

EXACTLY! Even in this version he is still being taken advantage of. #BeingThere #TCMParty

Oh I'm still trying to watch!

He's like a pet.
He's as invisible and neglected as when he was trapped and hidden away in his Father's mansion.
(Great, now she's trying to have sex with him because that's what SHE needs.)
It makes me SAD.
Hearing the book was different finally makes all of this make sense.

...They understand his good intention but they don't actually HEAR him or SEE him or what HE needs, they see a reflection of themselves in him, and get answers from talking to him that are about themselves. They get things from him and in return he gets food, shelter, company..

–and his whole existence has already been an overwhelming story of neglect, denial and trauma. He's not *actually* in equal conversation with any of them, he doesn't understand most of what's going on...

Shoot, I missed it. I left the room.
Was the line delivered by Sellers?
If so, I don't find anything he says funny. He obviously has mental differences and special needs that make him child-like and no one seems to notice–when they absolutely should(!)– #BeingThere #TCMParty

Okay, this stretch starting with the doctor arriving at Rand's bedside is the point that the story extends past where the book ends up, aside from the conceit of Chance becoming a political candidate. #TCMParty #BeingThere

THAT is a combination. 😀

This scene is the reason Laurence Olivier turned down the chance to play Ben Rand. #TCMParty #BeingThere
