My academic mystery, RESOLUTE DEATH, comes out at the end of October! More deets on 1 October!

Meanwhile, another wee tease of the cover art featuring the original work of UK artist, Stephen Richards.

#AcademicMystery #CollegeMystery #CampusCrime #CollegeCrime

A raven in black silhouette in flight against a dark red background. Text reads: Cover Reveal - 1 October 2026.

Note: The odd texture of the red is due to the image having been run through the Glaze app, "an open-source software tool designed to safeguard digital artworks from style mimicry by generative AI models" (from Wikipedia),

And so it begins. . . My academic mystery, RESOLUTE DEATH, comes out at the end of October! I'm so excited for the impending cover reveal, which features the striking, original art work of Stephen Richards.

Here's a small view of what's to come later next week.

Two squares: the larger dark red one serves as the background of the image. The smaller is of an ink-wash drawing of black and grey tree trunks on white.

Gave an Advance Reader Copy of my (very soon) forthcoming academic mystery to my dentist yesterday. He's been hearing hubs & me talk about it for the past few years, so it seemed only right. (He says he isn't into mysteries but was glad to have it.) 🦷 😁

Was surprised when an early reader described my forthcoming #AcademicMystery* as "dark academia." It's not that at all! My fictional college is a character unto itself, rather than a dramatic set piece.

(Wanders off to mull over writing a blog post about it.)

* Cover reveal next week! Stay tuned.

Liking this brief essay on Donna Tarrt's THE SECRET HISTORY. Takes on the notion of the writing of #DarkAcademia as more than mere vibe. Tarrt gets this.

Pullquote: "...the aesthetic created is a work of [her] writing skill."

A writerly friend was visiting this week & asked for an ARC of my forthcoming #AcademicMystery! How cool is that?! πŸ˜„

The Goodreads reviews for THE MISSING PROFESSOR cracked me up. Specifically written for faculty development workshops, the fictional (& rather banal) #AcademicMystery is intended for those discussions. Something the reviewers (several academics themselves) clearly missed. βš‘οΈπŸ“š

It's title adds a different subtitle & a review by, Ed Nuhfer, the Director of Idaho State University's Center for Teaching and Learning:

Informal Case Studies / Discussion Stories for Faculty Development, New Faculty Orientation and Campus Conversations.

"Any college that adopts this book to promote inclusive discussion with faculty, staff and administration should see many widespread positive changes. THE MISSING PROFESSOR packs value-per-page few books can match. First, it's a fun read! Through a story-telling framework that would make Kieran Egan proud, the author takes us with newly hired professor Nicole for an outrageous romp through the Higher State campus. Second, it's content rich. Finally, it has a captivating affective depth. Readers quickly recognize equivalents on any campus to the events and characters portrayed here. How these academic characters interact and treat one another not only creates their institution, but also molds them as people. This is the first book I've seen with the courage to look at some common interactions among academics in the eye and extend the invitation: 'Let's have a discussion about this.' Brilliant!"
