How important is it for a #TTRPG “product runner” to maintain a web presence for it?

I just invented the phrase “product runner” and feel like shelving my original though for the day to explore it.

You nerds all know our favourite TV shows now have “show runners”.

Writing a starter set isn’t easy.

I’m not talking about an introductory scenario in a book here. I’m talking about a separate product you can pick up which is complete & fully playable in itself which acts as an intro to the full game.

I tried to make one once for a game.

Getting the basics right - physical production quality. Cardboard.

Following recent replies here in praise of Boxed Sets - that will be a future “Thought”.

However, we can’t discuss that without first of all addressing an elephant in the room.

Production quality.

Time to share your Tuesday #TTRPGThoughts!

What kind of #RPGTheory thoughts have been on your mind lately? Or what's an #RPGDesign puzzle you've been throwing yourself into a lately?

And if you've got the spoons, reply to some others about their thoughts! <3

Given that combat is no longer seems as the central, most important, of TTRPGS - we’ve evolved beyond their Wargames roots - and conflicts are resolved using the same rules as everything else in the game - is there any game that explains that well.

I don’t buy or read a lot.

Should there be an example adventure in the rulebook?

Yes, it’s Monday and so I ask a “should it be in the rulebook” question. (I don’t know how long I can keep this up.)

For me, this also covers the “should the rulebook contain pregens?“

For me it’s a clear: “Yes!”

“I don’t believe in the no-win scenario”.

Of course we’re talking about The Kobayashi Maru Starfleet training scenario from Wrath of Khan. Invented by Jack B Sowards but promoted by Nicholas Meyer from the middle of a draft script to the opening scene because it is such a…

How much asymmetry should there be between the GM’s side of the table & the players?

I maintain a list of random thoughts I jot down as they occur & keep until I need them.

I saw that two of them are basically the same. One was:

Different spell lists for goodies & baddies?

How far can you go without having a fight?

It’s become a bit of a trope to look down on combats in #TTRPGs.

#TTRPGs grew out of wargames. Initially they were basically skirmish wargames with players controlling a single figure rather than an army.

Then, as they were…

Do you buy a #TTRPG rulebook and stop reading when it says - “If you’re only going to play this game stop reading now. The rest of the book is for Game Masters* only”?

Really?

* or Mistresses.

I know, this is an argument for people writing a rulebook in two parts.

Should NPCs be created using the same systems as PCs?

I’m finding my vocab limited this morning. The engineer in dry dock is a non-player character. But their droid isn’t. Is it?

I’m not currently finding the words for non-player but active tangibles with which PCs interact.

Should it be in the rulebook? (1) Character Creation

So I’ve decided, rather than do a mega thread about what should & should not be in a #TTRPG rulebook, to post an item every Monday and se how far it goes.

The traditional model I’ve grew up on was Character Creation first.
