Mathober Day 12 - Reciprocal Prime Constant

The reciprocal prime constant, or Merten's constant, is the sum of the reciprocal primes minus ln(ln(n)), as n approaches infinity. Merten's constant has an approximate value of 0.2614972128.

I continue to find a bit of time each day to produce a zine for #mathober! Today's is about the Reciprocal Prime Constant, which is nicely related to a thing I already knew about, but M is new to me. PDF: https://katiesteckles.co.uk/mo12

I found a big sulfur shelf at the park yesterday to doodle today's #mathober - Problem of Points

Code: codepen.io/editor/fract...

Desmos: www.desmos.com/calculator/i...

Under a sliver of a waxing moon an orange bracket fungus grows with probability tree configured points of milky water running down. There is a banana slug on the same tree with two other silhouettes of trees slightly picking up moonlight. The text says "a chicken of the woods has a problem of points."

At the end of #mathober I usually draw calaveras for our beloved dead. Is there someone from our community who passed this year that you want remembered?

Mathober 11 - Problem of Points

The Problem of Points is an exercise in fairness and probability. If two people agree to play a number of rounds to win a pot of money, and the game is interrupted, how can you best distribute the pot?

It's the 11th of #mathober and today I have made a little zine about the Problem of Points, which I'd never heard of but has quite a cool story! (PDF to follow later when I'm near a scanner.)

Today's #mathober prompt is Simple Pole, and I've done a little maths zine explaining what one is. (PDF to follow when I get near a scanner).

At these concentrations, nitrate isn’t a particular concern. I’m more interested in establishing how much accumulates between water changes, particularly as the new plants become established.

Next measurement in a week.

With 10 panda corydoras, 7 platies, 2 honey gourami and an increasing number of plants, I’m interested in the balance between feeding, nitrate production and plant uptake.

The previous measurements had pushed the estimates upwards. Today’s results have pulled them back down.

From a #fishkeeping perspective, the lower readings are encouraging.

Mathober Day 10 - Simple Pole

Starting with a Mondrian-inspired pattern of coloured rectangles, this sketch illustrates a simple pole using the function f(z) = frameCount/z, distorting the original image over time.

Today's #mathober - k-cyclic graph. I did polygons (1-cycles for my code and desmos) and a few with mycena fungi in the doodle.

code: codepen.io/editor/fract...

Desmos: www.desmos.com/calculator/3...

a banana slug moves to 4 sets of 4 long thin yellow mushrooms with each having a different configuration of spiderweb connecting their caps. the moon is almost new and mostly everything is in darkness, with text that reads: yellow mycena manifests k-cyclic graphs.

Mathober Day 9 - K-Cyclic Graph

A K-Cyclic graph has a closed walk of length k. In a fish graph, the graph can be cycled in 7 steps.

Using wobbly sine functions as a background, fish graphs swim through the sketch.

And I've found time to do a quick zine for today's #mathober prompt, k-Cyclic Graphs. Here's a photo, and I'll add a link to the PDF when I'm near a scanner. Graphs!

Yesterday's #mathober prompt, PARABOLIC ROTATION, led me to a fun yet mysterious function! (No scan just yet as I'm on the road, but will add links later)
