Ah. You’ll want Tent Four, then. The Butcher deals in hides. With unsettling speed, the toadwoman swiped an empty clay pot from the stack. Into it went a small, perfect scoop of white rice. She handed Marty the bowl along with a printed napkin. Then, with a bellow, she swiveled in place and cried, “NEXT!”

W…what am I supposed to do with…?

This time, the toadwoman spoke the answer. “Read the napkin, it’ll tell you what to do. Don’t be left inside after the closing third bell.” Then the crowd pushed and Marty was swept forward, the toadwoman disappearing behind the shoulders of a grumpy Yuan-Ti holding a heavy pack.

Tobie, the main character of Darwin's Cliff, is a socially anxious soul. She's perpetually worried about saying the wrong thing or looking naive and sheltered, especially in front of people who she sees as having their life together more than she does.

Hi #queerwriters and #LGBTQWriteAThon! TLR involves two terrifying, archaic sources of danger: dinosaurs and the patriarchy. Both cause my characters understandable fear. There are also anxieties over their own gender and sexual identities, but really, those worries are the patriarchy’s fault too.

Niot takes on both the protagonist and hero archetype. I lean into the typical desire for glory in good deeds (for France), but subvert it by having each attempt become utterly humiliating for him and more like the fool.

The smell of the wine on Wolfstanus's breath as he laughed at the attempts to put him into submission made Niot realize as he scrambled that he was losing to an Englishman who had been drinking. Drinking!

The humiliation of that day was not done with him yet.

And this was in front of an entire camp of men.

Wolfstanus managed to grapple Niot perfectly in the brief moment of distraction that thought brought while they writhed upon the slick ground. He flipped him. The belt upon his waist tore free. Niot landed face first into the muddy earth, pinned crudely by the man's hips against his ass just before the weight on his back left.

The damned crude thrill that traitorously ran up his spine from hips against hips made the humiliation far worse. Niot shoved away the feeling violently.

Wiping the wet dirt from his eyes, Niot twisted his head to look behind him in time to hear the men within the camp cheering as Wolfstanus proudly lifted up the French knight's freed sword in victory. Niot was relieved of the very object that signified that he was a true knight.

Wolfstanus had won.

The mere possibility had twisted his gut into knots. The reality made the cheers around him fall upon deaf ears. Rage blinded him.

Niot couldn't take the sight of it.

He twisted upwards the second he could, punching Wolfstanus in the face as hard as he could manage in the process. The English knight flinched back, not expecting the fight to go on after the sword was taken, but the grin upon his face didn't leave for more than a second, even when blood and mud dripped down it.

Launching himself at the grinning bastard, Niot abandoned the notion of honor completely. Yet Wolfstanus was still laughing as he raised his arms to block the flurry of fists attempting to beat in the sharp bones of his gaunt face while he now lay upon the ground.
