Oasis City does, in fact, have an oasis. Powerful magic from well-paid wizards keeps the water clean and plentiful - or maybe there's a sleeping water elemental beneath the sand.
Food isn't a problem, thanks to the city's status as a major center of trade and commerce.

#OctoberWorldbuilders, hello friends! Alright, it's time for the survival question I promised a few days ago! Tell me how the people who live in your desert actually survive in it. How do they get food and water? What kind of clothes do they wear? How do they stay warm/cool otherwise?

#OctoberWorldbuilders In ancient Mantebnea, Khuum was said to be the god of the west and north winds, drought, plague, and crop blight. The collapse of the climate three thousand years ago was taken as a sign of his victory.
The highland region west of what is now Hiddigaha is still called Khuum.

Tarik believe those who venture outside in a sandstorm are cursed to become undead. It’s not true, but there’s a grain of truth to it, as sandstorms often lead to disorientation and death. Bodies left out in the desert regularly become possessed.

The main creation myth going around in the Empire says that the whole WORLD was a desert in the beginning, and the gods helped tame it / made it fertile, but the desert is humanity's ancestral home and they must respect it even if they don't like it

5. Desert myths

The deep crevice left behind when Azrak jumped to his death is known these days as the Gates of Hel. Many dark folk tales have risen from this malevolent place, predominantly the eerie rumour that Azrak is still alive down there, prowling the deep as a zombie.

WIP 1 Shinigami Desert:
In the ancient era it was widely believed that the 7 Empires alone existed and that the rest of the earth was a lifeless desert filled with malevolent Shinigami. This was disproven when the monster king walked into the desert with no magical-

The Vekzis Empire's primary religion revolves around their interpretation of the primordial deity Orichalcum: the sun god, Orlandus.

According to their legends, the Tizrou was created when Orlandus scorched the land to punish an ancient civilization.

It's said that some of the earliest settlers of Urgaia were led there by the sun bird, Ruxima. Tough they endured many challenges, such as lack of water and hostile terrain, they eventually found a place teeming with gems and precious metals.

Urgaia has a lot of the standard desert fare: horses, camels, cacti, etc. Of course, there also plenty of species unique to Theryl. We're talking aquatic scorpions that dwell in oases and birds with stone feathers that nest atop rock formations.

In the world of Unsaved, the Medish Arh speak of the Ragged One. Sometimes a man, other times a woman or a man. They appear at the end of a storm and ask for something.
When they ask for water, you should give them food.
If they ask for food, you should give them blood.

There are a few stories about the Wilds outside Ivory City.
One is about a prince who escaped his prison only to be attacked by the giant centipedes. He was rescued by a cloaked wild woman.
There are stories that describe various safe passages through the area and an oasis...🧵

The eastern edge of the desert surrounds a great lake which is fed from underground rivers and the seasonal monsoon rains. The people who live there believe both the desert and the lake have souls, and each person's soul is a splinter of one of those greater souls

I mentioned it yesterday, but some of the Plainsmen of the Wastes believe the Altai maosa among them arose out of the copper mine, hewn from stone by their goddess. Their size, strength, and often inscrutable nature lends to the soft myth about them. 🧵1/3

Belkanel (or the Deadlands) is traditionally thought of as the home of Telamenos (Death). The belief is that she lives in the largest natural rock formation there. She did try that for a while but didn't like it much; she actually lives on a mountain now.

Cryptids are a cultural passtime for folks in the 5GC.
There's some Fearsome Critter (thats a technical term) around every corner if you look close enough.

The deserts of Camp D have a higher population of these than elsewhere, since cryptids thrive where there are...
