Are we in Autumn yet? For this #MosaicMonday, here she is. From the Seasons mosaic from Cirencester. I'm not sure she'd have been called 'Pomona', which might be a Victorian thing. Gorgeous grapes! Whole mosaic stunning and can be seen in the wonderful @coriniummuseum.bsky.social 1/2

A bust of a figure wearing a grape-laden wreath and a leopardskin tunic. The hair curls onto either side of her face. Across her right shoulder is a blade with curves. Above her lost left shoulder is the dark feature I suggest is part of a vine leaf. This illustration is within a plain circular frame with 'Pomona' beneath, which was how she was described in the 19th century, but she is part of a large mosaic showing many figures.

It’s not often that you have a chance to combine #MosaicMonday with #MementoMoriMonday.
(And maybe also #MonkeyMonday?)

This small mosaic, rich with symbolism, was excavated at Pompeii in 1874 and featured in Pink Floyd’s concert film, Live at Pompeii (1972).

Roman mosaic from Pompeii, depicting a skull suspended from a plumb line, between hanging symbols of wealth (left) and poverty (right) — which weigh the same.

For #mosaicmonday one of my favourites, the so-called "Orion Mosaic" House of Jupiter (V), Pompeii. Supposedly it's Orion apotheosising into an asterism, though I'm not entirely convinced.

Something cheery to start the week 😀 Hope you have a great one!
A post for #MosaicMonday. This tree of knowledge mosaic is on the wall of a school library. From www.mosaicart.org.uk

Photo of a mosaic art piece showing a tree embellished with green leaves and colourful books. On the top right of the tree sits an owl. The bottom of the picture shows green grass and the background is sky blue. At the base of the tree there are a few small piles of books

Hope your Monday hasn’t shocked the system like it seems to have for this guy! His Leafiness comes from a larger mosaic depicting a bear hunt from the C4th CE. He’s not involved, but is hanging about in the foliage border.

#MosaicMonday #AncientRome

Description from the Getty: “Enough of the fragmentary floor survives to identify the subject as a bear hunt…The outermost border is a luxurious acanthus scroll. Heads emerge from elaborate leaf complexes in the corners, and smaller figures of erotes with armor, fruits and animals (both real and imaginary) are tucked into the scrolling acanthus along the edges.” Object Number: 72.AH.76.21

Work In Progress on the Villaquejida octopus. It's advancing slowly; each tessera lining the arms (not tentacles) has to be shaped individually.
