It had been with her from birth—this #hunger she couldn’t satisfy.

One day, she was surprised to see that there was a book in the mail. She read it again and again.

Her friend asked, “Why don’t you go to the library?”

Her eyes widened, and she knew her life would never be the same. #vss365

At the labor camp the adults barely got the rest and nutrition needed to face the arduous mining work.

“How are you doing, little warrior?” my older sister asked.

I was growing up fast and knew to keep silent, even though #hunger had evolved from pangs to outright pain.

The Witche's
Ginger bread

The boy,
He's meant to be
Toiled and tumbled
By the elder one

While they
Cackle and lap,
The cream
Of buttered scones

When we were growing up we had a hunger
To see and change the world while we were younger
Then energy did fade
And we became quite staid
Youthful hunger changed to a need for slumber

If it weren’t for the #hunger pangs they wouldn’t have had to change #locations. Travel anywhere was a huge #leap for them. Rather than #inflict any further discomfort, they #announced they’d be the first to go.

rummaging
through mud and dirt

people have thrown away
Now to forage for dinner
begging for scraps
before the end of the day
