This survey isn’t atheists answering a question about a church they were never going to attend. 44% of Gen Z respondents who were raised Christian said the same thing. For a significant number of young adults, the public association between Christianity and the MAGA movement has become a barrier to greater church involvement. That should matter to all of us. If the people we’re supposed to love and reach are telling us that something about our Christian witness is pushing them away from God, perhaps our first response shouldn’t be explaining what’s wrong with *them.* Maybe we should ask: What are they seeing in us? Jesus said people would recognize His disciples by their love. Not their theological convictions. Not their ability to hate others' sin. By. Their. Love.Paul said the fruit of a life shaped by God looks like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. So when young people hear from American Christianity's loudest voices, is that what they see? Do they see Christians moving toward the poor, the outsider, the rejected and the people society has decided are enemies? Or do they primarily see Christianity as an army fighting for power in America’s political war? This isn't ultimately a question about Gen Z. It’s a question about us. Because if people tell us that our Christian witness is pushing them away — and our first response is to insult them — we may want to reread John 13:35. Christian courage isn’t giving ourselves an "A" in Christlikeness and calling the performance review complete. It’s having the humility to ask whether the way we represent Jesus is helping people see Him — or making us one more obstacle in the way. And if the answer makes us uncomfortable? Good. That’s what self-examination is for. Someday, I suspect the question won’t be whether we won the argument. It will be much simpler: Did the way we live our faith help people see Jesus — or make Him harder to see?
