#beingmassaged new media is often used uncreatively, since we see the past so clearly in our minds and refuse to clean our glasses to see the future of whats ahead

@chillmountaineer.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 8:11 PM

I personally thought that this is an easy example to see how the portrayal of media and my personal prior perceptions may influence my takeaway of information presented to me. As we can see here, the newspaper matches the main headline to the color representing a blackout. #beingmassaged

This portion is something we can see for ourselves, too. The content and television media we consume can change our identities with more and more consumption, since McLuhan describes that to basically be more and more immersion. I can fully agree with this perspective of television. #beingmassaged

I feel like this picture can also be seen without considering the context of which McLuhan describes. As part of my previous post, I feel like this is representative of how people are more perceptive/believe/listen to what they can visually see. #beingmassaged

The point toward the end of his book is something I never thought to consider. He explains how we often seek to prioritize visual evidence over abstract, or more specifically, language. It makes sense that this could be another reason for writing to have been created to record speech. #beingmassaged

This text relates to our generation well as young adults today, I would say, for similar reason as well. This is not exactly 100% true, but this describes many folks my age. Oftentimes people seek opportunities that now allow them to be part of the entire process. #beingmassaged

#beingmassaged to the flavor of the most recent past, a clear, vibrant flavor, while the future is still hazy, yet to be imagined

The ad about memory stood out to me because the ad makes having a good memory seem like the key to being more successful and popular #nottrue #beingmassaged

I enjoyed the reference to Michael Faraday in the text. I really enjoyed studying physics 2 here at Rutgers and hearing about a prominent figure in electricity/magnetism was cool to read. McLuhan cites him as an example of how his amateurism led to his inspirations. #beingmassaged

"History as she is harped, Rite words in rote order" translation: Memorizing the “right” words in order instead of actually understanding history. #beingmassaged

There is importance to sometimes be the "antisocial" McLuhan describes. His claim about the antisocial is that they can present perspectives that others may not realize/think about. It makes sense to me since certain people may value other opinions and thus may not fit in with others. #beingmassaged

#beingmassaged "I don't follow you" meaning "I don't think what you're saying is rational" is something i never really thought about. "lead me to what you mean" is how i've always meant it, but i'd also like to think i'm an open person. have i been disagreeing with people by accident?

@kaylak4t.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:36 PM

I think McLuhan is saying that young people actually have a lot of influence, even if people see them as “punks.” #beingmassaged

Continuation of last post: it will be an "information megalopolis." The reason for the cities no longer existing for their conventional purposes, the increased globalization and accessibility of information naturally would decrease a demand for the reasons for having a city. #beingmassaged #woah

@chillmountaineer.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:31 PM

I thought this page in the middle of the book to be pretty important to the author's perspective. As discussed before, he views the changing world of information transmission to be a reason for the decreased dependence for physical city hubs for work and residence. #beingmassaged

@kaylak4t.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:29 PM

McLuhan mentions that education should be more discovery, possibly through discussion wink wink, rather than just being told what to think. #beingmassaged

#beingmassaged at first i was confused and frankly grossed out by the toe imagery, but the spirals of a toeprint mimicking the spirals on a wheel are so genius, and also weirdly relevant since i watched the f1 race this morning, it's almost like the opposite of the saying "reinventing the wheel"

We treat newer technology the same as old technology. We often fail to see what makes it different #beingmassaged

@chillmountaineer.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:21 PM

Continuation of last post: In my opinion, the benefits of having a tangible form to record speech (alphabet) rather than "...acoustic space..." is great in that it has been the reason for others to understand each other. Written and thus spoken alphabet is a uniform medium of thought. #beingmassaged

@chillmountaineer.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:17 PM

A good point that was made on page 29 was how the coming of writing led to the development of architecture and towns. McLuhan claims that "the goose quill" put an end to the "...directionless, horizonless..." world that lacked a tangible way to record and transmit speech. #beingmassaged #dang
