Unsurprisingly, no one in the Victorian era won the prize.
However, in 1969, the Académie des Sciences awarded the Pierre Guzman Prize in the form of three gold medals to the Apollo 11 astronauts following humanity's first crewed landing on the Moon.
Clara Guzman's will specifically stated, "I exclude the planet Mars, which appears to be sufficiently well known."
The exclusion makes considerably more sense in the astronomical culture of the late nineteenth century.
The Pierre Guzman Prize originated with Anne-Émilie-Clara Goguet, widow of Marc Guzman, who created it in memory of her son, Pierre.
The successful person was supposed to establish genuine two-way communication by signaling another celestial body and receiving an answer.
Did you know?
In the Victorian era, a French woman established a 100,000-franc prize ($19,300) for anyone who could communicate with another celestial body and receive a reply.
However, Mars was excluded because apparently it was not considered difficult enough.

I absolutely loved this documentary!
It's so detailed and the reenactments are great! 🥹

The Lighthouse Board therefore tried to find a man to take the position while she continued performing the work herself.
After years of effectively running Robbins Reef, she finally received a permanent appointment as keeper.
After her husband died, Kate was left with two children and a lighthouse that still had to operate every night.
She assumed responsibility for the station. However, government regulations did not permit women to serve as principal keepers of offshore lighthouses.
