These are sea bees (Idiomysis) shrimp, and each one is only a few millimetres long. They gather in swarms above the reef, constantly darting around together, making it much harder for predators to single one out. #Idiomysis #MacroPhotography #MarineLife

I love box crabs, probably because of the way their claws fit so neatly in with the carapace (and also, just look at it!). This is Calappa calappa, disturbed on a night dive in Lembeh and rapidly scuttling away from the bright lights.

A rounded crab with large claws that fit neatly into the space in front of its body. It is brown, with reddish spots on it; the claws have some lighter ridges on the lower parts and raised teeth on the upper parts. The crab is scuttling over black sand, although you can't see this in the photo because its legs are hidden. But trust me, it was *moving*

After promising my lovely wife I'll be careful, I spend hours every day hiking all over the remote parts of Maui. Hoping to find cool spots like this ocean cave. Gotta make sure the waves aren't crashing in from the far side.

Pink Tritonia (Tritonia exsulans) season started at the end of June. I didn't realize how huge they are in comparison to the typical Tritonia we see year round! The one in the first photo is actively laying eggs!
