This is also for #TolkienTrewsday as an Indonesian Tolkien fan! I first read Tolkien to cope with the chaotic downfall of Soeharto. I love connecting the themes with local folklore I grew up with, including putting Tolkien and Kanjeng Ratu Kidul in a presentation together (proof in the post below!)

#TolkienTrewsday Week 185: Tolkien’s fans

Hullo! I’m Derek, and I am a fan of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien!

2026 actually marks my fifth year as a Tolkien fan, and though it’s relatively short compared to other folks in the fandom, my Middle Earth journey has been very fruitful!

A picture of me holding up the One Ring while dressed in a Bilbo Baggins-inspired outfit.

#TolkienTrewsday Week 185: “Tolkien’s fans” (09/09/2026) - #Tolkien saw some fans as a “deplorable cultus” but this week we celebrate the good in fandom. As Bilbo once said: “I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” #Tolkien #TolkienMonth

A rare photo of the Tolkien Trewsday organiser, on the deck of a replica Viking ship, during a Lord of the Rings Online kinship moot to Roskilde, Denmark. We rowed this ship out from the Viking Boat Museum and then sailed for a while. Altered in Photoshop with the sketch/watercolour filters.

🧙‍♂️🧵 2/ Let’s begin! This week’s theme (Week 185) is “Tolkien’s fans”. Please use the following tags when you join in: #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday #Tolkien. You can tweet art, quotes, thoughts, blogs, academic work, reading recommendations, etc. 🗨️

Trewsday is the Hobbit name for Tuesday! Tolkien Trewsday is a community event
based on BlueSky but sometimes is run on other online spaces.
Each week we form a fellowship to collectively post about a pre-selected theme about Tolkien (his works and his life) as well as adaptions, academic writing and creative stuff such as fanfic, fanart and cosplay.
Themes are selected by myself (the organiser) and a steerage group but also by polls or guest hosts/curators. Together we will build a collective outpouring of creativity, knowledge and love for J.R.R. Tolkien.
The inspiration for this comes from the highly successful #FolkloreThursday which engaged lovers of Folklore, academics, artists and more to share their love of folklore.
We only ask that if you are joining in, please do so with courtesy and kindness in your posts/tweets. This is a positive-action community event, open to all and supportive of fan diversity. Intolerance, racism, bigotry have no place here. Thank you!
In 2025 Tolkien Trewsday had a redesign. The Two Trees remain symbolic but now Telperion (Silver Tree) has a sword trunk and Laurelin (Gold Tree) has a staff
trunk. There are two versions of this new design (Top and Left).
