#Sustember
Julie debated her one phone call for only a minute and exhaled a long breath when Izzy picked up. "Izzy. I so didn't do it!"
"Do what, Weirdo?"
Julie could hear Izzy's drum stick on her practice pad. Paradiddle diddle played as triplets. She shook her head. "I've been arrested for murder"

It's the work of a moment. The knife from her sleeve, straight across the throat. Morvin looks down at the body.

Then she leans down and stabs: again, and again, puncturing the corpse's torso with enough force, she's in danger of ripping it apart.

"Get in the fucking car!"
"You're braking my arms!"
Nate twisted the man's arms harder, panting as he pushed him into his car. "Fuck do I care! You're alive? Scumbag fuck!! Slamming the door, he went and sat in the driver's seat, slamming the accelerator. Looking in the rearview mirror

My own #Sustember --

The camera shakes in her hand as Verena takes photo after photo of the bastard. "I've got you, Jones," she murmured. She looked back on the photos, ensuring they weren't blurry or wrecked, and turned towards her next destination -- the DA.

Thinking his words were honey, Mick leaned on the counter with a snide toothy grin. The unamused waitress refilled his coffee before excusing herself to bring food to one of tables. The bastard was alone. This was Rachel's chance.

Pulling the green visor of the cap on her head, Rachel...

Made up characters for #Sustember flash fiction

This is exactly 200 words which was not on purpose but pleases me immensely.

“So, Antoinette, what now?” Clancy twirled the broadsword once, its blade glinting viciously under the worklight. “You think those fencing classes in college will be enough to bring me in?”
“I’ve told you, Clance’, Toni is fine.” Tony browsed the offerings on the blacksmith’s table, running her fingers over blade and pommel. “Once you’ve been in our pool, you’re family.” She picked up a long, thin blade, testing its weight in her right hand and then her left, hoping the tremble in her fingers wasn’t obvious.
“Toni,” he spat, as if it were bitter in his mouth. “I suppose it does have that butch ring to it. Did you have to butch up for the FBI?” He was coming towards her now, his large frame between her and the exit, the festival goers outside unaware of the showdown happening in the blacksmith’s tent. “Are you butch enough to kill me?” She could see the dark shadows under his eyes, smell the sharp scent of sweat and metal on him. Hear the cut of the blade as he dragged it through the air.
   Clancy raised his sword.
   Toni drew her gun.
“Is this butch enough for you?”
   She squeezed the trigger.

#Sustember Ignoring the so-called corpse as they wave frenetically from the cupboard, I say:
“I confess. Release my spouse, I did it.”
Foolish. Rash. Only I’m dying to meet the inspector for a nice friendly chat. I pity them, really. They can’t solve the case nor hide the murder they’ve messed up.

Let's write some fiction on the fly! What would your character do, how would they navigate this? What would they do to avoid being implicated, themself?

Let's find out!

Flash fiction time! Your character's spouse is arrested for a murder. They beg your character to find evidence before they're used as a scapegoat in a cover-up, insisting they're innocent. Your character has just found the "murder" victim, alive and well. What does your character do? Write us the scene! Try to keep it under 5 posts, or link to a blog post using the prompt.

I have a lot of cults in my stories, and they're basically communities built around conspiracies. And in the babysitting story, the main characters are coming up with their own conspiracy theories to explain what happened to their missing classmate.

Sorry I’m running behind, I started a new job and it’s a lot.

Cole doesnt believe giraffes are real. He thinks theyre cybernetic or something. He went off during #QueerCharChat about it 😂

This conspiracy may or may not be based on one of my most severe delusions.

Happy #Sustember 17!

Sorry for being late! 🙏 I've been falling behind on prompts!

On internal reflection, there are conspiracies in almost all of my books 😂

BLUDEYE BEACH features a town, not unlike in the movie JAWS, that wants to pretend the missing tourists isn't that serious.

#Sustember

Yes and no. Conspiracies as the term is generally used are a false lead - it's something the characters consider, and the reader might believe, but is ultimately a red herring.

Of course, all you need legally for a conspiracy is multiple people working together to commit a crime... ^^

Oh, my work is all about conspiracies.
Not only do my characters believe in conspiracies, they tend to take an active role in them.
One character in my first novel was not only involved in a conspiracy within a conspiracy, but he then broke away from that to start a new conspiracy. :)

StS is driven by a conspiracy (not well-understood until late in the story) to gradually take political power by compromising key officials - but not such powerful ones that they'd be obvious suspects.

Hell Is Work: Well... Kind of. Virgil's not the only one with "a plan".

Muertos: There's lots of conspiracies about the Lord and Lady of the Dead disappearance.

That they've died, they became regular people, or they turned into carrier pigeons.

Absolutely. In QUEEN FOR A DAY, most Chantarans believe their realm lost the craft of forging magickal Water Gates centuries ago. Admiral Calder suspects the crown only lets that rumor survive, because no nation would misplace a power like that.

#Sustember #AmWriting #DarkFantasy #MythicFantasy

Calder detested dry land. It lacked rhythm and held no sense of flow. It remained resolute. Unmoving. A beautiful kind of wrong. Nothing compared to the ocean’s rocking, the familiar argument between hull and wave. Nothing beat the feel of waterlogged timbers beneath his bare feet at sea, boards breathing up through his soles as if the ship itself had a pulse.

Like countless seafarers before him, Admiral Calder had always been enamored with the stars glittering overhead, indifferent beacons to those upon land who kept their gaze transfixed on one foot in front of the other. Now here he was, dragged ashore and summoned to meet with the queen no less. He wanted nothing more than to turn around and chase salt wind back to open water.

Even sailors, who’ve weathered the worst the world can imagine, know there’s no good reason to remain upon the shore.

He had come through Chantara’s Water Gates in haste, less than a full ring from the coast to the palace. He emerged with cold spray still on his skin and the taste of minerals on his tongue. The Gates were miracles of ingenuity and magickal power, allowing travel from one point in the realm to another, so long as a continuous flow of water bound the path between.

Rumor claimed Chantara had lost the craft of forging new Gates long ago. No one, neither the Royal Alchemist nor the late Queen Disaya herself, knew how to build them anymore. Calder had always suspected that was a story the crown allowed to breathe, the sort of lie told to discourage sabotage and vandalism. A nation would not misplace a power like that.

Not if it intended to survive.
@lockheartfiction.bsky.socialSep 17, 2026, 2:33 PM

Resist has entered the chat. Conspiracies built the plot.

It isn't so much that any character believes a conspiracy, but that they are true, and for some, no one knew it was an issue/thing.

There are conspiracies both actual and assumed in Shadow Cursed that lead...
