#SundaySnips (A tiny clip of dragon POV)

She felt like she would fall slowly to the ground like a leaf falling from the top of a tree, but she kept her wings spread and the wind lifted her faithfully.

#SundaySnips

After a conversation the previous night Shawn has started to consider whether his feelings for his best friend are entirely platonic. Being talked through Liam's passion project is giving him lots of interesting data...

‘I’m interested. What’s in the greenhouse?’

‘Come and have a look.’

With the door closed there wasn’t a huge amount of room, so we were in each other’s space a bit as he showed me the mixture of seedlings and plants that needed protection from the North London winter.

It was just an insignificant moment. He reached across me to gently run the leaves of a seedling between his fingers. There was something so tender in that small gesture I had to fight a compelling need to wrap my arms around him.

I didn’t, of course. There would have been some explaining to do if I had, and I probably needed to get things figured out in my own head before I said anything to Liam. The blanket-like wave of affection that enveloped me in that small glass box wasn’t familial or platonic. I didn’t want a friendly hug. I wanted to slip my arms around his waist and lean my head on his shoulder while he held me.

If we were dating, we could do that.

That was true, but I wasn’t sure Liam was going to be thrilled with, let’s date and just cuddle.

I pulled my attention back to what he was saying, which wasn’t difficult.
He cared so much about every single plant, it lit his face up and made him utterly captivating. I asked as many questions as I could think of just to make him keep talking.

He told me when each one would be planted out and where it was going. I asked him about compost and watering and feeding and listened intently to the answers.

I really was listening, but I was noticing things I’d never paid attention to before. How blue his eyes were and the way they crinkled at the corners when he smiled, like the whispers of future wrinkles. The way his mouth moved when he talked. The comforting familiar warmth of being close to him.

It looked like Jim’s theory worked both ways. And I was one hundred percent certain I’d rather be standing in this tiny greenhouse with Liam than on any date I could imagine with anyone else.

The #SundaySnips Word of the Week is 'leaf' - just in time for the first blush of fall color here in the beautiful PNW. Ironically, I've only used this word once so far in draft even though forests are a huge theme throughout the story.

The Sunday Snips word of the week is 'leaf' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP with the word of the week - The Monday after Bekah’s birthday party, I nearly shot up off my mattress like a rocket. I woke to the sound of the earliest songbirds, daringly rustling to life as night still hung in the sky outside. I threw my bedroom light on and got dressed with more excitement than I had in years. Kicking around the loose leaf paper sketches and scattered comic books on my floor, I grabbed the outfit I’d laid out. I caught a glimpse of my smile in my bedroom’s closet door mirror and froze. The look fell from my face, ponderance suffocating joy as I wondered if I looked like an idiot being that excited for a Monday morning at high school.

Artemisia reminiscing about her formative years

#WritingCommunity #WriteSky

“I guess you learned more than they meant to teach you.”

She looked out at the wood the cottage abutted against. “Very much. I learned that I love being out in nature. I love the wind on my skin and the sound of the leaves rustling. And I learned that girls make me melt. I never understood how girls talk about boys, until we started talking about girls."

Not autumn leaves, but still a pleasant little scene.

From #Herbs&Iron my cozy romantic fantasy wip about a witch returning home after a war to reopen her gran's herb shop and reconnect with the blacksmith she left behind.

The Bramblewhite River was a ribbon of gold beneath the setting sun, shimmering as the water rippled in the distance. A cool breeze rustled the leaves overhead and dried the sweat soaking through Sam’s shirt. From where he sat beneath the black-oak tree, he could see all the way to the end of River Row. The cobblestones followed the gentle slope of the hill, trailing past the lumber mill and the shipyard to end at a short quay. When he was little, sitting on his babba’s knee, it felt like he could see the whole world from here. It was still Sam’s favorite place to end his day.

“We cleared a lot of orders today,” Bern mumbled around a mouthful of crusty bread stuffed with fried nuggets of mashed peas and herbs.

“We did,” Sam agreed, leaning back against the bench. He ate the last bite of his sandwich and washed it down with a long sip of Miss Edie’s darkest stout.

They’d finished Hazel’s stove and Farmer Coate’s plowshare along with an order of hinges for the cabinet maker. Sam had spent the rest of the day hammering out blades for hoes, spades, and shovels. This was the time of year when farmers suddenly realized an important tool had rusted out over the winter. Now his muscles ached, but it was the pleasant sort of burn that let you know you’d done something worthwhile.

As an added bonus, it distracted him from the memory of accidentally exposing his greatest sin in Hazel’s kitchen, if only for a little while.

#SundaySnips Sept 6: Another bit of ephemera, this one from the religious text of the Tovirans.

Things happen when it is time for them to happen. Nothing can halt the falling of the leaf in autumn; nothing can impede the blossoms of the spring. Even a late frost can only delay the inevitable; even the warmest of autumns cannot forestall winter.

And so it is with humanity as well: When it is time for two to meet, they will. When it is time for two to part, they will.

#SundaySnips - leaf

A Harvest of the Heart won't be a WIP for much longer, but it has such immaculate autumn vibes that I had to use it! 🍂

Finally, he grabbed his bag, donned his hat, and set out into the beautiful, crisp autumn morning. The sun shone merrily as red and gold leaves fell from the oak and maple trees that surrounded his cottage. It was a wonderful day. A perfect day.

Quillbert looks so cozy in that scarf!

Here's Katie helped out Kyle's dad and got rewarded with seeing fun pictures of teenage Kyle.

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'leaves' highlighted.

I sit down next to him and look out at the beautiful view of the woods out back. Most of the leaves have fallen with just a few stubborn ones clinging to branches. AJ and I surprised Taid with raking them all up last week while Kyle was in LA with the reshoots. In exchange, we were rewarded with hot chocolate and old photo albums of Kyle as a teenager.
He was such a massive nerd. Not only that, but a 90’s nerd which was a peak time for nerdiness.

#SundaySnips | Leaf -> Leaves
#⚔️🌿🌼 Elias was never the same after his son's death, and neither was his forest.
cw grief

The seasons changed, and still Elias fasted, barely eating or drinking. He could not sleep, having grown so used to the sounds of Bren’s snores. The silence was driving him mad.

He took to weeping after an indeterminable amount of mourning. His clearing that he established was overgrown. Bren was not there to look at the leaves, or listen to his songs, or be amused by Sage’s antics. Elias’ world was devoid of joy.

More of his hair was turning silver. Elias noted it whenever he had the will to comb it, which was not often. The air was not as welcoming. The trees barely spoke to him anymore. Perhaps they were just as melancholy.

Welcome to #SundaySnips! A once-a-week prompt game for writers hosted by myself and @hookandquillpress.com

This is the time of year when the leaves are supposed to fall and the heat is supposed to break. Not, you know, where I live but still...
