The fact that cult rituals often involve a number of other people focusing on an individual who is strapped or held down — the immobilization prior to birth, as well as the helplessness after birth — on something raised, like an altar or table, and then “worked upon” in some way or other is a particularly graphic expression of a neonate’s experience of being on a medical table after birth, watched by a number of others and worked on. The ritualists’ use of robes and costumes, especially if they involve covering the face or the wearing of masks, is also not that much different from the way a baby in modern times perceives its welcoming into the world among masked and robed medical personnel.

Early Theorists: Psychoanalysis and Birth Sigmund Freud — Birth as Prototype for All Anxiety While Freud (1927) disregarded major effects of birth on personality, he still saw the birth experience as the prototype of all later anxiety. Therefore, we may speculate that a combination of these factors resulted in a compensatory system wherein the fact of increasing brain size is eventually resolved, to date, by a comparatively reduced gestation period accompanied by increased need for child care after birth; increased need for economic dependency overall (both during and after gestation) by the female; increased need for male parental investment in providing for both female and child; and increased birth pain correlating with increased cultural development to offset or mitigate the effects of birth pain. The net effect is a species with prolonged child care; increased tendency toward single-family units; increased brain size; greater cultural elaboration; increased birth pain for the neonate; increased “intelligence”; and increased neurotic and psychotic behavior (thus idiosyncratic and variable behavior) which requires further cultural accommodation, hence cultural elaboration — all evolving simultaneously, interrelating and mutually reinforcing each other. My friend, Sonjamarie Weems, provides an excellent example of how we — humans in general — misinterpret Nature’s ways looking through our cultural biases and filters. She says, "I remember watching this documentary where a mother elephant killed her baby, and through tears I was thinking that was the cruelest thing I had ever seen another animal do. Years later I watched the same documentary and had a different perspective, because I saw that the herd was starving and that the baby was sick. A pride of lions were already tailing the herd. The mother, knowing that the baby would die first, killed it to likely prevent the agonizing death that she knew was coming to it. It’s hard for us to understand how a mother could do that. Think of the movie Titanic ... who wasn’t upset with the 3rd class mother for putting her children to bed in a sinking ship? Makes you think." And this required continued, ever increasing, growth in neural cells, thus brain size, thus skull size. This increased to the point we are today where in order to fully gestate the brain we ended up with, we would have had to have a twenty-one-month gestation, which we never got. There had to be another way. Human Nature How we solved that problem of getting a big head out of a small opening, at this point in our evolution, was to be born earlier than would be ideal. The ever bigger skulls of neonates led to a tendency for newborns to be born more and more prematurely, for with skulls at smaller sizes these prematures would be able to make it out of the womb. Barely. The larger heads still meant greater pain for mothers as well as the newborns themselves than planetmates in Nature needed to endure.

PREFACE Page xvii …dominance rituals and displays — which have most often been used to support the idea of brutality in Nature — were ultimately found to have been distorted by the male researchers who did them. These primatologists were selective in their picking groups to study; they blew up the significance of the behaviors they witnessed; and they failed to mention behaviors that did not fit their conclusions. So their studies reflected more of the savagery in the human researchers than in the baboon planetmates. As for warring and mass killing, well, no planetmate is doing anything to end life on this planet like humans are at the moment. Similarly with career, craft, or occupation, historically children are born into the occupations they will adopt in life. Tinker, tailor, spy, or blacksmith, the boy takes up the craft of the father; the girl takes up the family roles and tasks as modeled by the mother. And by the way, that last crinkle in this is telling: The fact that women, in postmodern times, have taken back the freedom to choose careers and service of their own is an aspect of this explosion of cultural possibilities. INTRODUCTION. ON SANITY, INSANITY, AND ECOPSYCHOLOGY Page 3 Sanity Yet it is not that there is no basis for establishing what is sane. What this book does, in particular, even more so than Planetmates and Prodigal Human, is show what is meant by that. Following from concepts first brought out in my work Wounded Deer and Centaurs, this work shows just what sanity looks like in our current situation. “What does sanity look like? This is what sanity looks like!” Amazingly, in the context of a vision of humanity set within Nature, as one planetmate among all the others — as I explained in my Planetmates (2014) — and clearly having gone through a devolution from Nature, not an arrogant transcendence above Nature, allowing us dominion over it ... as I showed in Prodigal Human (2016) ... we are seen to be quite insane. What is sanity then? This book shows that. What we find out is that the opposite of insanity is not normality at all! Clearly, our normal sanity is just another version of insanity ... a kind of group insanity, an insanity of the herd ... like an entire population with the same disease. We call it “human nature,” though it is not. We do not recognize the sickness.

Birth Relivings, Importance of Birth — Negative Imprints but Positive Effects, Too Another psychoanalyst, and pediatrician as well, Winnicott (1958) also held that birth is remembered and is important. He insisted that the birth trauma is real, but he disagreed with Rank and Fodor that it is always traumatic. He suggested that a normal, nontraumatic, birth has many positive benefits, particularly for ego development. Still, he contended that traumatic birth is permanently etched in memory and leaves a lifetime psychological scar. Winnicott (1958) also suggested the possibility of prenatal trauma. He has been called the first primal therapist in that he described the first birth primals — actual observable relivings of birth — spontaneously occurring by some of his patients during their sessions with him. Thus he was beginning the trend beyond mere talking association or dream analysis as ways of accessing and integrating this material.

MICHAEL ADZEMA Page 20 Boob Tube With a View Speaking of television, there was that very interesting and much heralded episode of the Moonlighting series in the late Eighties which — coincidentally employing an article and book title of mine, “A Womb With a View” — showed Bruce Willis in a womb-like enclosure as a fetus viewing, with the help of a higher spiritual ally, the upcoming events of his life. This plot idea was also an amazing, perhaps synchronistic, mirror image of a short story I wrote in 1979 titled “Birthing, Forgetting.”2 A Hundred Monkeys and Counting I point out the personal synchronicities because they speak of a “morphic resonance” phenomenon indicating ideas whose time has come. Be that as it may, the episode of Moonlighting is further proof of the growing belief in womb consciousness and interest in perinatal events.

Birth Pain Makes Us Humans Birth Pain Caused the Feverish Minds of Humans, Which We Call Intelligence To continue, remember that what is universally acknowledged to distinguish humans from other species is our intelligence and the elaboration of culture that comes from that. However, with the understanding of skull size, birth, and repression described above, we see these much-touted distinctions and claims to superiority to be merely the byproduct of our neocortical attempts to deal with unconscious pain, specifically, that of birth trauma. “We Are a Fever, We Ain’t Born Typical” Birth pain caused the feverish minds of humans, which we call our intelligence. “We are a fever. What to believe — as linked to religion, God, spirituality, mythology, good and evil, and much else — are rooted in the patterns of experiences we universally experience over the course of our lives, leading up to adulthood. Importantly, in this book, we look at the self-sabotaging we all do, at why we cannot seem to change those patterns, and, finally, what will allow us to finally be the person we know we can be but which somehow always eludes us. Insanity In addressing such an ecopsychology which sees humans within Nature, we see that normality and sanity, as viewed from within the domains of psychology as given to us down through the ages, are instead quite insane. From a context of what would be sane for humans, in contrast to it, we evaluate where we are psychologically as humans, how we got to where we are, what it is about us that is wrong, what it has led to inevitably and why, and what insights it brings us about what now to do. How do we become sane in an insane human world — a world that is at war with its own home, that is burning down its own house, even as it barricades itself on the couch, watching television and eating chips from plastic bags that will not decompose, and so simply adding more fuel to the inferno already raging all around. Nandor Fodor Dreamwork, Birth and Prenatal Processing and Relivings, Prenatal Origins of Consciousness and Trauma Also a psychoanalyst, Nandor Fodor (1949) focused on the reflections of birth and prenatal material in dreams. He also designed interventions in therapy to release the negative effects of birth and to process prenatal memories. He was the first to mention actual relivings of birth, in which veridical memories were recovered. FALLS FROM GRACE Page 12 Otto Rank Psychoanalysis, Birth Trauma, Foundations of Personality and Some Myth, Separation Anxiety Other early psychoanalysts disagreed with Freud on this. Otto Rank is the most notable of these. Following Freud’s basic psychoanalytic reasoning for personality patterns in early infancy, he asserted basic patterns of experience and ideas that are rooted in even earlier experience. Rank (1929) claimed the deepest, most fundamental patterns of these personality constructs originated at the time of birth, which Freud thought was not possible. Based upon the dream, fantasy, and other patterns of associations arising in his patients in psychoanalysis, Rank postulated a birth trauma, which he saw as a critical event in laying down in each of us particular patterns of thinking, motivation, and emotion for the rest of our lives. Notable among these prototypes was a feeling of a paradise once known but somehow lost, a separation anxiety caused by the separation at birth, and a resulting futile and lifelong struggle to re-unite with that golden age and that early beloved because of a desire to return to the womb.
