On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, UC ANR honors Indigenous peoples and their generations of land stewardship. Across California, we partner with Native communities to support food sovereignty, traditional ecological knowledge, disaster resilience and beneficial burning.

On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay, it's fitting that the 1st honoree in our "Voting in Memoriam" celebration is Lucy Nicolar Poolaw a.k.a. Princess Watahwaso. Through activism, she highlighted the reality of Americans as inherently immigrant & the NECESSITY of Indigenous participation in democracy.

The quote is often credited as a Cree proverb had been modernized from the original. However, there is no evidence that this is specifically Cree. It was popularized in the 1980s but resonates with many Native traditional beliefs about the accumulation of wealth.
