I would envision the Kirrhin language as non-tonal language, but the emphasis/stress on certain letter sequences in some word could be a source of distinction for intended meanings. Similar to the variations in pronunciation with 🧵

Gonna go ahead and do mine now in case anyone isn't sure where to start with theirs!

Na'aqal is a stressed language, not a tonal language. Some rules:
1. A syllable immediately following a glottal stop usually gets stressed. Examples: Na'aqal = na'-AH-qal, Xu'ue = zhu'-OO-way

#Conlangity Day 4

This is our last day dealing with the sound of your language! So let's talk about pronunciation.

Which syllables get stressed & when? Does it change the meaning? Is your language a tonal language? Do letters ever change based on other sounds near them or their place in a word?

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 4
[SOUNDS] Lay down some general rules of pronunciation. Think about things like:
- Emphasis: where is the stress usually placed in words?
- Changing sounds: do any letters change depending on context?
- Tone: does the tone change the meaning?
- Exceptions: are there times the rules break?

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social.
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

STRESS
The stress of a word can change its meaning - for instance, in English some words put stress on the 1st syllable when it's a noun, and on the 2nd syllable when it's a verb.
"Our schedules conFLICT" = verb
"He has a CONflict" = noun
"We need to proGRESS" = verb
"We've made PROGress" = noun
-------------
TONE
In many languages, such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Yoruba and Navajo, the TONE changes the entire dictionary definition of a word. Consider making your conlang a tonal language!

There are almost no consonant clusters (there are a few limited ones which may occur). There are also some sounds that don't occur in the standard form, such as 'h' , and most voiced consonants, and the 'sh' sound (though all of these occur in dialects).

*dusting off my notes*

In Na'aqal, you notably don't find sh (ʃ) or ch (tʃ). Na'aqal speakers would want to pronounce those as zh (ʒ) or j (dʒ), respectively. The "er" sound like in English doesn't really show up either; words spelled with "er" (e.g. Ada'atzer) are pronounced "air."🧵

#Conlangity So higher vowel sounds - like "I" and "E" - are less used, in part because they're difficult for giants to pronounce. They also don't use too many unvoiced sounds - theirs is a language built for booming between mountains, those sounds don't carry.

#Conlangity forgot to do this yesterday so uhh have the IPA charts for Tagoric and Viechtyren

Based off my chart yesterday, the ü/ë/y/o vowels + their long forms I intend to be less commonly used and I plan to reserve them for "significant" words that need to stand out if at all.

The ts sound will never start a word by itself nor end on one and must be followed by a vowel.

#Conlangity Day 3

I definitely find today's prompt easier. For whatever reason I've thought more about what sounds the language doesn't have then does.

Yesterday, I talked about how Arca'raed doesn't feature the letters Q, W, X & Z. Of these, the language doesn't have any instances of sounds 🧵

Though Redwoods Tukhé doesn’t contain phonemes that would give Anglophone speakers difficulty, it is missing the voiced /ʤ/ of Angie’s name (the G) and replaces it with a voiceless /ʧ/ (ch).

Angie becomes Anchie in the Redwoods.

I really haven’t developed the Sheltri language enough yet to know what sounds they wouldn’t use other than sounds a human can’t make.

In modern sign language, esp in younger gens, one handed signs have become more common bc ppl are often holding their phones.

In my WIPs Realm, 2 handed signs are ALWAYS used. Its actually considered rude if you use 1 hand for a 2 handed sign

Although the language has labial phonemes, they aren't used very often. Where they appear, they're usually serving as a softer bridge between vowels where a coronal consonant would be impractical or difficult to articulate. It's uncommon for words to start with a labial phoneme. 🧵

#Conlangity 3. As I mentioned yesterday, while vowels play a big part in Kraslan, it doesn’t have open vowels, only one near-open, /a/ [ɐ], and one open-mid, /ai/ [ʌ].

In the consonants, we find no guttural stops, pharyngealisation, or implosives. Clicks aren’t found in 🧵

I have a few things i still need to iron out from yesterday so please be patient with me

ð & θ (those th sounds) neither exist in Sun-Drop, any of the dialects or standard

t sound exists but is less common than d, so there are some occasions early when Kai is learning to speak 🪡

Longer consonant clusters are rare in Nummerfil.

The 'rchb' combination for example only exists in the word 'Gorchbold' (a name for our species meaning ugly monster from hell gorch-bold),a loanword from Drotniril, which has more Germanic-sounding harsh sounds.

B, M, and P sounds are rare to nonexistent in Tellari-Universal, again because Tel have rigid jaws and cannot make them. This is part of the reason they don't simply learn human languages instead of constructing a whole new language: in many cases, they just can't.

I feel as if Polish, Serbian, Croatian, etcetera, consonant-heavy languages and consonant-cluster-heavy languages would, as a whole, be very difficult for the vowel-loving speakers of Kirrhin, and those languages evolved from it. 🧵
