Two kingdoms, one enclosure. At Château de Gisors in Normandy the motte was raised in 1096–97 for William Rufus and carries an Anglo-Norman octagonal keep; the round tower by the gate is Philip Augustus's, built after he took the castle in 1193. Pick a side: Rufus or Philip. #Castles #History

Oblique aerial view of Château de Gisors, Normandy: the octagonal keep inside its ring wall on a grassy motte at the center of a walled park, the round tower of Philip Augustus beside the gatehouse at lower left, the town's roofs all around.

Three things about Urquhart Castle the postcard leaves out. (1/3) The oldest Loch Ness monster story is not set in the loch. Adomnan, writing about 700, puts Columba's water beast in the River Ness, and uses a different phrase when he means the loch. #Castles #History #CastleSky

A 150-kilogram stone, two miles: the range of Mons Meg, six tons, made at Mons in Belgium, a 1457 gift to James II of Scotland from the Duke of Burgundy. The barrel burst in 1681. It came home to Edinburgh Castle from the Tower of London in 1829. Bigger gun of its century? #Castles #History

A view of the remains of the 12th century Helmsley Castle, Helmsley, North Yorkshire, England on a cloudy August day.
In the foreground a happy looking Border Terrier dog faces the camera. He has an alert, affectionate expression and his tongue is out. Behind him is the tall, stone keep-like east tower. The ground is covered in parched grass due to the prolonged dry spell.

Construction of the castle starting around 1120, the castle evolved over 900 years from a formidable medieval fortress, an Elizabethan mansion, a besieged English Civil War stronghold and a Georgian romantic ruin.
It was started in around 1120 by Walter L'Espec, a man whose large size and loud voice were by all accounts more impressive than his name, which means"Wally the Woodpecker". Most of the visible medieval fortifications, however, date from the time of crusader Robert de Roos and his descendants.

Many don't realize Cyprus is dotted with castles. Kolossi Castle is small but wonderfully intact—worth a few hours.

Château d'If, off Marseille, keeps two cells labeled for men who never existed: Edmond Dantès and the Abbé Faria. It never fired a shot in anger. Dumas serialized The Count of Monte Cristo from 1844 and gave it the only siege it needed. Dumas before the boat, or after? #Castles #History

Le Nôtre aimed the Vaux-le-Vicomte garden, southeast of Paris, at one spot: the top of the rear stair. The pools only look parallel. They widen with distance, and the canal hides in a dip. Stand there and tell me whether the trick still works on you. #Castles #History

Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire.

According to tradition, the castle is subject to two curses. One relates to a sealed medieval dungeon, which legend holds would bring death to any intruder and blindness to his wife.

The Revolution did not make Mont-Saint-Michel, in Normandy, a prison. Men were arriving by lettre de cachet while the monks still lived there. 18 were held in 1776, more than 700 by 1818. Name another abbey that turned into a prison. #Castles #History

Ask for the oldest castle in the world and you get three answers. Doué-la-Fontaine: oldest dated keep in France, tenth century, surviving as remains. Langeais: oldest square stone keep still standing in France, about 1000. Windsor: oldest occupied. Which test would you use? #Castles #History
