#SmallPoemSunday @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
yes, more #JaneHirshfield

“A deer rises onto her haunches
to reach for an apple,

though many fallen apples are on the ground.”

A REAM OF PAPER
I have a ream of paper,
a cartridge of ink,

almonds,
coffee,
a wool scarf for warmth.

Whatever handcuffs the soul,
I have brought here.

Whatever distances the heart,
I have brought here.

A deer rises onto her haunches
to reach for an apple,

though many fallen apples are on the ground.

Density
You walk your home inside your fist. At night, the rain sleeps twice as fast. In your coat pocket are a key and a decoy. It is because of the density, repeating and alone.

Life Sentence

Your eyes are dry. You put the kettle on,
drink tea, eat an apple.
You'll live.

This #SmallPoemSunday, I offer up this lovely gem from “Nova Nights” by Guy Biederman.
Thanks @tomsnarsky.bsky.social for hosting!

RECOVERY
Her best poems arrive without fail in the shower with warm water running down her back.
Later, pencil sharp notebook open
dry & squeaky clean she chews on her pink eraser and tries to remember.
The muse just laughs.
It's where she learns the best poems never make the page.

Haha okay, insomnia, it's #SmallPoemSunday! Hi, @tomsnarsky.bsky.social , here's The Sign Says:

The Sign Says

No Solicitation!
except the Tamale Lady!

and I say, yes, Tamale Lady,
knock on my door, come up
to me on the sidewalk with
your white five gallon bucket
full of foil wrapped, hand made,
homemade tamales.

I buy four every time. I trust
your kitchen better than
any restaurant or grocery store.
I know love
when I smell it.

WHAT COMES
to speak is not yet to have spoken
the not-yet of a white realm of nothing left neither for itself nor another
a no-longer already there, along with the arrival of what has been
light and the reverse of light
terror as walking blind along the breaking sea, body in whom I lived
the not-yet of death darkening what it briefly illuminates
an unknown place as between languages
back and forth, breath to breath as a calm
in the surround rises, fireflies in lindens, an ache of pine
you have yourself within you
yourself, you have her, and there is nothing that cannot be seen
open then to the coming of what comes

love is a dog from heaven

sometimes falling takes you
to a house so far, so different
from familiar childhood hell
@midwesternskirt.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 12:32 AM

i wrote another poem where i create a title & then only use letters from that title in the poem. #smallpoemsunday

peace be with you

act the coy
bitch. pay
a tithe
to cope,
babe. bow.
wow.
we bite
without teeth.

The Storm Breaks

As he crosses the lake
in his small boat, suddenly
the trees, the reeds, the air
are leaning against him.
