Holly Alpine: "AI in fossil fuel production is sabotaging the energy transition – the work of all of us – and sustaining fossil capitalism itself. Yet the dominant framing is not even acknowledging it."

I'm coming away from Climate Week deeply troubled and frustrated.
"On one hand, guns can be used for peace. On the other, we need to mitigate safety issues in gun manufacturing." That's what we sound like right now in the "Al and climate" debate. It's framed as addressing gun violence while the framing leaves out... the guns (the tech itself).

There were 142 sessions on Al and climate at Climate Week. With a few exceptions (credit to Public Citizen, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), WattTime.org, and NewClimate Institute, and a few others for raising it, or letting me present), every one I saw framed "Al for good" against the harms of datacenters (red circle).

None even mentioned the other side: Al for fossil fuels - how technology is reshaping the economics of extraction itself (red bar). Without tech, fossil fuels would be declining. But the bad guys have the tools too (e.g., Al-optimized offshore drilling, Al-driven refinery optimization, autonomous surveillance), have had them for a while, and are thriving.Addressing datacenters matters, and needs to happen. But it's not the same as addressing Al itself, and saying it is is dangerous. We have to make the manufacturing plants safer while also putting guardrails on what's rolling off the assembly line.

Al in fossil fuel production is sabotaging the energy transition - the work of all of us - and sustaining fossil capitalism itself. Yet the dominant framing is not even acknowledging it.

I don't think this is malicious. It's some mix of not knowing, the scale feeling too big to face, staying in one's lane, or not knowing what to do next. All fixable.

So, whichever camp you're in:
• Haven't seen the data yet: Read our paper, published in pj Climate Action, Nature journal: https://Inkd.in/gY9cwq5M.
• Seen it, haven't looked closely: Now's the time.
• Working on a different piece of the energy transition: This is undermining your work, so you should be involved.
• Ready to act: Let's talk, I have ideas.

I'm concluding a great #ClimateWeekNYC for @ucs.org! Despite challenges, lots of great progress, ideas, connection and community happening everywhere on climate, clean energy and transportation. Let's use the momentum to keep driving us forward.

It was a bustling and productive week at #ClimateWeekNYC, and our team joined a variety of conversations about subjects on everyone's mind — not just climate, but also energy security, AI, and more. 1/3

Lots of talk about AI, data centers and the rush to market at #ClimateWeekNYC this week. Less so about the industry’s carbon footprint, it seemed. tinyurl.com/4u7b5mk

There’s a lot of aluminum in a place we don’t typically think to look: the trash.

At #ClimateWeekNYC, we shared how AI-powered sorting can recover aluminum & more directly from municipal waste. The tech exists & we can put it to work at greater scale.
