A robust, roughly pear-shaped black beetle with a pebbly, shiny exoskeleton with small irregular patches of lighter brown scales and, of course, a snout (short and broad with antennae coming off it). It is on a flattish pale stone surface.

The same weevil from a slightly more overhead view. You can see both of its good-sized round black compound eyes.

Analytical workflow for constructing a global Carabidae phylogeny. (1) A mitogenome-based phylogeny was inferred from newly generated and public data (mitogenomes and nuclear markers), incorporating a nuclear backbone constraint to produce a tribe-level tree of 451 tips. (2) Species delimitation was performed using 75,475 filtered COI barcodes (BOLD + GenBank) with mPTP and concatenated with genomic markers to build a supermatrix. (3) A species-level phylogeny was reconstructed under a mitogenome backbone constraint, yielding a final tree of 7196 tips.

Der Dornige Wimperbock (Pogonocherus hispidus) ist gerade einmal 4 mm groß, besitzt aber beeindruckende Fühler. Vorsicht - es gibt ähnliche Arten, die sich in Details unterscheiden.

Besonders auffällig sind die sehr langen, fein behaarten Fühler, die weit seitlich über die Oberfläche ragen. Auch die dunklen, behaarten Beine und die charakteristischen Facettenaugen sind gut zu erkennen.

A yellowjacket was…No! It's a beetle! A beetle with an elongated body, black with yellow markings, that make it look like a wasp at first glance, feeding on pollen from aster-ish yellow flowers (idk I'm not a plantologist). It has long red-brown legs and very long red-brown antennae, as befits a member of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae). Its black, oval eyes have "cutouts" around the base of the antennae, like the cursed phone front camera notch.
