A man, with a cane walks between high, brick walls. It's a narrow passageway, the only softness is provided by tree branches vaulting over the wall. It's refuge from the throngs of vacationers streaming through Venice: A non-stop invasion that led to a significant backlash against, and a subsequent reduction of cruise ships. As I see this man, I feel a little guilt that I've intruded upon his peaceful oasis, and also delighted that I found it.

La Biennale.

Das Foto zeigt die weiße Fassade eines großen Gebäudes mit dem Schriftzug La Biennale im hellen Sonnenschein. Der Eingangsbereich besitzt weiße Säulen und quadratische Ziegelpfeiler, die teilweise mit Pflanzen begrünt sind. Colour photo taken late at night, at floor level, of the corner of a building - white textured stone and terracotta plaster above - in the right half of the frame, and an alleyway disappearing into the distance on the left. There is a tiny chink of light spilling from a first storey window in the alleyway, but it is otherwise in complete darkness; and I n contrast, the corner of the building on the right is in a pool of bright warmth from a streetlight above. Standing on the flagstone pavement just at the corner is a discarded bottle of prosecco, with a single stem red rose, dried and withered, sticking out of the neck, its leaves making a chaotic shadow on the wall behind. When I took the picture yesterday I thought it looked quite sad and forlorn, and like the end of something, but as I'm looking at it again this morning, it's more a picture of resilience and defiance and hope and new beginnings.
