"Didn't know it was a federal crime to watch Adam Sandler movies." Bailey rolled her eyes while her hands were up. The government found her setting #sail near the coast of Long Beach. She thought everything was over when she quit, but the government didn't think so. #vss365

Why can't you be more like your brother? Charismatic, athletic, loved.
My parents give him wings. I watch him #sail into the sun and plummet.
On the ground, I build slowly. Measure thrice. Test the tensile strength. Reinforce.
My tower to the stars takes a lifetime. But it does not fall. #vss365

sometimes I daydream
of the new Twilight Zone
a place to strand evildoers
so the rest of us can live in peace
the sign on the gate reads
This Platform Is No Longer Supported
and all around
the windmill sails go flap, flap, flap

“It is a strange craft that you #sail, with those spars across your Eye-Nest pole and Mother-Eyes upon your prow, to say nothing of the head of a monster going before you! And a bireme! We have taken tales of those, but no citizen living today in No’chet has ever seen one!”

He was meant to set #sail to Australia but halfway he decided to change course. He realised that he was running away and he needed to face his demons. Unfortunately, his demons saw him escaping and got the sea monster to gobble him up.

the wind
filling my sails
to move me
the storm
keeping me humble
the star-filled sky
the compass
guiding me
the vessel
the water
the waves
the ocean
the shore
the harbor
the whole journey
you
are all of it
everything

I call your name; a whispered word sails on the breeze.
Unheard and broken by the distance it must travel.
The silent wave brushes your lips, unheeded.
You will never know my final breath was given just for you.

Ink sketch of a woman standing on the edge of a cliff. Her hair whips around her as the dress catches in the breeze. Mountains in the distance.

Flashes show the scene
A raging storm, the ocean screams
The long-ship shudders, splitting seams
As to the port it leans obscene

Tattered #sails whip to and fro
Just splintered wood where oars would go
No hands on deck or down below
A phantom ship; a ghostly glow

Once there, next moment gone
It never stays for long
A fleeting glimpse, a sailor's song
Of an odyssey gone wrong.

At Moynaq the trawlers sit in sand, the sea a day's drive off. Each spring, Rustam's grandfather bends a patched #sail onto the one mast still standing. Cotton took the water, he says, cotton can fetch it back. This morning the canvas hangs sodden and dripping brine into the dust.

#sail

The pleasure of the ride when the wind takes your sail
Until you find yourself in the heart of a gale
Relinquishing control
Now washed up on atoll
Looking for a ride back on the hump of a whale

"I'm surprised you agreed to come out today," my husband said, "I didn't think you liked sailing."

"Normally I don't," I agreed.

"What changed your mind?" he asked as he unfurled the #sail, freeing the body of his mistress that I'd wrapped inside.

"That," I gestured at the body. #vss365

There upon the glass
A tiny boat with a tiny sail
A single sailor parched and frail
Out of their depth
Directionless
No wind at their tail
