This week for #FindsFriday, let's go a little deeper than usual and explore the mystery of the 'Chalk Goddess' of Grimes Graves!

Who made it and why? 🤔

And how did it end an archaeologist's relationship? 💔

A Roman curse, written on metal and thrown into the sacred spring at Aquae Sulis (modern day Bath) as a plea to the goddess, Sulis Minerva.

The text complains about the theft of ‘Vilbia’ - probably a woman, possibly a slave.

Crucifix from a cemetery in medieval Vilnius, Lithuania #FindsFriday
Along with isotope data, it suggests the presence of Christian communities in the pagan city, painting a picture of Vilnius as a diverse and internationally connected city.

Loving this giant model of the Homo antecessor skull - you can walk inside!

The original was found in the Atapuerca caves nearby, thought to be ~1 million years old!

Gilt bronze, dredged from the sacred spring — the temple fused the local goddess Sulis with Minerva, and the lead curse tablets thrown into that water ('I give to the goddess the man who stole my…') are the closest thing we have to everyday Romano-British voices. A wonderful #FindsFriday.
