#FantasyIndiesSeptember
Day 27

Research? I LOVE research. I've done so much on myths and legends of the Wild Hunt and the fae. Plus I've been researching the craft of writing LitRPG, and how to improve that aspect of my WIP.

Thanks @lvrussell.bsky.social @chesneyinfalt.bsky.social

Fantasy Indies September with each day of the month listed with its theme. Today is the 27th, and the theme question is: what research do you do for your writing?

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 27 - Research

I do a lot of research about word choice, as I hate sounding too anachronistic, but I also dont try to stress about it. I also research wounds because it annoys me when characters dont react proper to injuries.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 27

I research any number of things for my writing. Lately, geography has been a big topic, and of course animals... I have the most fun researching when I'm writing my Regency-era stories. The clothing, the manners, all very entertaining to me!

It depends on the piece. For my shorts, I don't do too much research, opting for something that's based in something I know well. For my novels.... well.

TFTNG has a massive encyclopedia with tons of research notes about various events in history. S3 has legal notes.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 27:

I only research what I need to research. When I encounter these situations, I want to make a scene as grounded and as realistic as possible without needing to be real. Also, I write high fantasy.

27. What research do you do for your writing?

Not as much as I probably should, ahem. I’ve been reading a book about inventions to decide what the former-Earthling enclave has re-invented. And a podcast ep on the history of nail polish was oddly relevant to Novella 11.

27) What research do I do for my writing?

I researched a bunch of mythology and folktales for my short story collection. That was fun!

For my WIP, I've been in the worldbuilding trenches with my husband and editor. He knows a lot more about space travel than I do.

Almost Criminal is set primarily in San Francisco, so I've had to look up quite a bit about it.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 27: What research do you do for your writing?

Depends on the books.

For the Triempery books I researched philosophy, physics, bitheism, river floods, and psychopathy.

For the Ibis books I researched biology, genetics, hive minds and invertebrates.

What research do you do for your writing?

It depends on the project, but my favorite research topics involve biology.

For Wraith and the Revolution, it was plant biology.
For Serpentus, anacondas.
The Caein Legacy was praying mantis and army ants.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 27

I've done a lot of research around names & their meaning. I wanted each character to mean something, sometimes even forshadowing what will happen to said character 🫢 (only for minor characters).

26) Late on this but here's a wind pool description. #FantasyIndiesSeptember

She didn’t have to open her eyes to know the scenery around her. She had it memorized: every crag in the rocky cliffs, topped with short mops of green and brown grass, that surrounded the circular crater. The wind pool, a sphere of wild wind magic, hovered ten feet above the cliffs, providing a wide, unobscured view of the sleepy seaside town. The jagged, rocky ground below.

Because the wind pool was naturally occurring, Ardyl parents said it was dangerous and told their children to avoid them. But because it was the only interesting thing in Ardyl, the children often didn’t listen.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 26: Snippet

A little different one - my MC created a prayer to awaken belief in the Incan goddess of air Mama Wayra & since he's more comfortable with Christian liturgy, he's/I've stolen from a Methodist prayer at Pentacost. (The lines in bold are said in unison.)

The screen is full of text, written out almost like a poem, with nearly every other line written in bold. I’m not sure where he got this from, if it’s something that he found in some of the pre-War archives he seems to be able to access or if he came up with it on his own, but there’s something about it that feels right:

Great goddess, Mama Wayra,
we confess that we have sinned
against you and against our home.
Your Spirit gives open air,
but we have preferred enclosure.
Your Spirit gives wisdom,
but we have been foolish.
Your Spirit gives clarity,
but we have preferred our own vision.
For the sake of our world, forgive our folly
and enable us by your breath
to serve you in peace and hope
to sanctify our home again. Amen.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 25: Music I've been inspired by lately

I'm getting ready to go on a trip with my mom which will involve a fair amount of driving so I'm putting together a Mom Playlist; it's reminding me of all the classic rock songs that I've always loved (esp. the Eagles).

Day 26 of #FantasyIndiesSeptember

Another unedited snippet from Book 8 of my Oracle of Delphi series WIP. This is from about 138 CE. The oracle has been winding down for some time now.

#WritingCommunity

The Pythian Games were a massive success, bringing a wealth of coin and business into the Sanctuary and city of Delphi. And the business continued afterward, as no fewer than five statues of athletic and musical competition winners were dedicated in the temenos, primarily from Asian cities such as Sardis and Ancyra.

And yet, Apollo's oracle continued to have few consultants. Most of the local population, and especially the wealthy, chose to frequent the Thriai the pebble and lot diviners—or the astrologers, several of whom had settled in Delphi in recent decades. Each Oracular Day, the Pythian Priestesses Lanike and Antiochis continued to prepare themselves with fasting and purification rituals, and Lanike sat the sacred tripod for the entire day on the chance there might be a consultant arrive unannounced. List of daily post prompts for indie fantasy authors for September.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 27/Sept/26: What research do you do for your writing?

My setting has a roughly 'Victorian-era' level of technology. So if I'm going to include something, I'll check if it was in common use before 1901 and how it worked.

It means we've got people using early cameras, etc.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 26. Snippet Saturday

I took a deep breath as the clanking of silverware resonated through the massive room. I looked to the side of my plate, but my own silverware alluded me.
“A bundle of silver lost is a new journey discovered for another,” my youngest sister, Tymphony, said as she handed me a spare.
“Old wives’ tales,” I grumbled as I took it and skewered the venison strips on my plate.
“Even old wives are right on occasion,” she said with an amused smile.
“You’re sounding more and more like Lizette each day. Old wives this, old wives that. Next you’ll tell me I’m being grumpy.”
