So, the theory of Arca'raed's origin can be divided into competing camps: The mystics and the anthropological, for lack of a better term.

The mystic belief is held by probably 80% of the population of the main Istemorian continent (the percentage is lower amongst the clainns living 🧵

#Conlangity Athan came about as a simple trade language between giants - it's utility allowed it to spread and evolve, as giants grew from disparate tribes into fledgling states. It was frequently used in territorial disputes, from mountain to mountain.

Handspeak as an actual structured language formed when the third Idol appeared almost 600ish years from present time.

It originally formed between Deaf/HoH individuals to be able to communicate. The Realm is made up of different languages (though not a ton) so some signs do vary---

#1 Shaylorian is a constructed language. The cult of Shaylor believes that the mortal world is a corruption of the pure planes of the Realms Beyond (afterlife stuff) and elemental planes. Their goal is to understand the cosmology enough to unravel (aka destroy) the mortal world.

All 3 languages you'll see yerulo speak began life as creoles cobbled together when beings from 8 separate realms of existence met and started moving into each other's territories. Ppl eventually agreed it made sense to standardize a few of them.

They must preserve the original

Tellari-Universal is a modified form of Tellari-Contextual that removes and replaces all nonverbal components in order to facilitate communication with species that favor verbal communication.

But we already knew this! So, where did its originator, Tellari-Contextual, come from?

Redwood's Tukhé arises from colonization via sequestration. It represents the languages spoken in an area that stretches from the modern Danube River delta to the Dnieper and then the Volga River delta following the northern shores of the Black and Caspian Seas. 🧵1/11

Nummersil is older than the presence of Nummerfa in Nuanderra and must have evolved froma language that their ancestors spoke when they left our world around 10K-12K years ago. This Proto-nummersil has a similar script and is decipherable by current Nummerfa.

Atchua’s roots are in the dialects of wolf tribes in the southern Rugged Mountains as part of the broader Alpine Wolven language family.

The original speakers didn’t live in total isolation from the communities in the foothills and farther beyond; however… 🧵

Sun-Drop (as most every place on the planet) has a minimum of three languages. A spoken language by mammals and aquatics; vocalizations made by insectoids, and sign language for intelligibility between the non vocal.

But Sun-Drop Standard, the spoken and written language is a bit 🪡

It's quite literally three languages in a trenchcoat. It more or less developed following the entire continent deciding it was united following some unpleasantness, through deliberate decisions and the need to communicate, and slowly morphed into one language over millennia.

It is non-tonal and the stress is mostly flat for most words, though there is something of a pitch accent (which changes with dialect). You'll be understood even if you get it wrong, mostly. You can change a sentence into a question by changing tone.

#TheDragonblood: Draconoidic formed when Petanata, the first dragon, tried to speak Nemorian, and replaced sounds with ones they could make. Petanata's Dragonblood parent may also have occasionally tried to speak and teach Nemorian in dragon form and made similar substitutions.

Shallin-Ethray (except I may change it to Ethray-Shallin) is one form a of a language that has developed in *many* places & times where humans are strongly connected to spiritual magic (I may someday work out a different form of the language, where the sounds are less softened, - 1/?

Kirrhin is sort of an all-rounder, aside from the creole notion.

It developed in isolation on the moon, where the reihyanyun evolved and are natively from. It served as the step-stone of their people to communication with others 🧵

The mer are historians of language. This dates back to their human ancestors when they lived on ships and languages were shared among survivors. Nivani began to emerge from the languages they knew when the mer departed for the sea. As a means to distance themselves from their cousins

My headcanon for Na'aqal, the language of Atalantis, is that it originated as a creole language.

Originally Atalantis was connected to Europe/Africa via a land bridge, a LONG time ago, but over time the land bridge disappeared & various nomadic tribes were isolated on the island...🧵

We're taking a step back from the details of your conlang today to look at the big picture. What's the origin of this language? How did it evolve? What purpose did it serve?

This is important to think about, because it should inform things like grammar rules & word etymology!

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 5
[CULTURE] How did your language develop? Did it form in isolation, or through migration or colonization? What purpose did/does it serve? Is it a creole, a common tongue for trading, a language of scholars or elites, a peasant vernacular?

I have one hard-and-fast rule *so far*: The C is hard when there’s a single consonant after the following vowel and soft when double consonant. To wit, words:
Cinnawon = “sinnawon”
Cinshamm = “kinshamm”
Proper names:
Cerel = “Kerel”
Cinnaroth = “Sinnaroth”

In two-syllable words🧵
