Thomas Hood published 'The Tower of Lahneck' in 1842 as fiction. A critic told him it was an old Rhine legend in any guidebook; Hood printed a note saying he had invented it. 20 years later German papers ran one like it as fact. Which haunted-castle story should we date next? #Castles #History

Doune Castle, near Stirling, was built in one campaign around 1400 for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and never finished. In 1746 Jacobites held prisoners above the kitchen; the men knotted blankets and climbed down. One later signed the Declaration of Independence. Name him? #Castles #History

Doune Castle's entrance front near Stirling, Scotland: the tall gatehouse tower with its round stair turret at left, the long great-hall range at right, on a grassy mound under a blue sky, a paved path leading up to the gate.

The funny thing about game design is that everything in the real world becomes game inspiration. So here I am in Romania, visiting monestaries and citadels and wondering, "now how could this add to the castle levels of Found?"

By 1832 some 847 animals lived on Pfaueninsel, Berlin's Peacock Island, bears to reindeer. Most left in 1842 to stock the new Berlin Zoo. The white palace they roamed around is painted timber, built in 1794 to look already ruined. Which wins: the bears or the fake ruin? #Castles #History

Got out for a short walk this afternoon, so today's (phone) photo is a view of #OgmoreCastle and the #SteppingStones across the #AfonEwenni / #EwennyRiver , and of course some #Sheep in the background because this is #Cymru

Looking across a shallow river with large irregular stepping stones providing a crossing point. 2 white swans swim close to the stepping stones. On the opposite bank a ruined castle sits on a low grassy mound. To the left, low walls and a partial tower remain and to the right the roofless remains of a small chapel. The two sites are linked by a small brown wooden bridge across a shallow gully. A wooden hill rises behind the castle

For #PalacesAndGardens #PompAndPatterns. Campbell's of Beauly is a legendary country tailor in the Scottish Highlands, much beloved by the British royals. It's the perfect outfitter for a visit to Eilean Donan Castle. #Scotland #castles #photography #landscapes #Highlands #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

The photo captures the interior of Campbells of Beauly, a traditional tailor and outfitter located in Beauly, Scotland.

Numerous tightly rolled bolts of tweed fabric fill floor-to-ceiling wooden shelving units lining the walls. The textiles showcase a wide variety of rustic colors and patterns, including earthy greens, rich blues, browns, and classic plaids.

A long, polished wooden service counter dominates the center of the room. It features built-in cabinets on the front and holds a few rolled fabric samples at one end. This photo shows the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, a historic 13th-century fortress situated on a small tidal island in Dornie, the western Highlands of Scotland. The stone fortress sits on the right side of the frame, featuring high towers, classic battlements, and a saltire (the national flag of Scotland) flying from its grounds. Extending from the left, a traditional multi-arched stone footbridge connects the mainland to the island castle.

"Donjon keep" is Walter Scott's phrase, first cited from Marmion, 1808. Keep itself is a 16th-century word for buildings raised 400 years earlier, and one proposed root is kipe, a basket. The building came first and the word came later. What do you call the big tower? #Castles #History

Which country has the most castles? France, 45,000, says the internet. The French ministry's 45,223 counts every protected monument of every kind; its register holds 6,286 château notices. Germany's castle institute says the number is not known. Whose count would you trust? #Castles #History

Wes Anderson used Kriebstein Castle's walls as a prison in The Grand Budapest Hotel. The tower climbs about 45 meters from a spur above the Zschopau in Saxony. Its founder recorded a plan to build in 1384; the roof beams were felled around 1399. Which film castle fooled you? #Castles #History

Germany could have rebuilt Heidelberg Castle. It said no, and the reasons still govern how ruins are treated. (1/3) French armies wrecked the palace in 1689 and 1693; lightning finished it in 1764. By 1800 the Romantics had made the wreck above the Neckar a pilgrimage. #Castles #History

Spent a few hours on Lindisfarne Island (during low tide). Very flat light that day, but at least some texture in the skies.

1 or 2? I go back and forth...
