A juvenile Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus) in flight over open water, seen from above and slightly behind against a smooth pale blue sky. The bird glides diagonally through the frame with its long, narrow wings fully spread. Its plumage is brown with fine pale barring and speckling on the wings and back, and the dark outer primaries show thin white shaft streaks. The head is turned toward the camera and shows a pale buff face with a lighter collar. The short, pointed tail is dark with a white barred base. Soft daylight lights the bird evenly. when we visited symonds yat last week this buzzard sat in a tree just below our viewpoint. Its bright yellow foot is curled around a thick dry branch. Its brown and cream breast feathers are puffed out and its steely eye is keeping a look out - it was actually very irritated by a group of jackdaws inhabiting the same tree - it looks a bit peed off

Keeping an eye out 🦅

Kestrels rely on their warm brown, dark-spotted plumage for camouflage while perching along the open fields. Their pale underbelly minimises their shadow when hovering in the sky.
