Created from photographs of old urban surfaces there are various weathered textures throughout. The crow-like coucal has an almost black body except for the wings giving its back a rusty reddish-brown colour and its eye which is blood red. It has a long tail and its beak is open. The pale green ground is littered with rocks and fallen leaves with the lower part of a tree visible just behind the coucal and a small pond behind that plus small plants dotted about throughout. Partially hidden within the garden are two other birds, two snakes, two lizards, two insects and a mouse, all of which are dwarfed by the large coucal.

Most impressive about rooks for me is their ability to always look really cool. It seems like they're posing at all times. I played with some violets here to better show the complexity of their plumage.

This is one of the illustrations that didn't make it into the final poster project. The alternative version where the bird is a marsh crake, which is a far more rarely seen bird in Central Otago.
