September 7, 1983, 43 years ago today: Took a day off the trail (my last). From May 18, 1983: A side trail, up from the North Carolina side, joins the Appalachian Trail just in time for this colorful display of trees in full bud.

We are walking a trail through a field of lush green grass under a bright partly cloudy sky. Just ahead two trail signs mark the terminus of another trail joining the AT from the right. Just past the trail junction is a sprawling rather open grove of trees in full bud with pink, white or red flowers that continues along to the top of a knob. Beyond that knob rises the crest of a much taller mountain with wooded flanks and open, grassy stretches along parts of its crest. The two peaks of the mountain rise near the center top of the photo.

September 6, 1983, 43 years ago today: After South Twin, the trail was much easier. That is a relative term in the White Mountains. I still had to contend with a zillion rocks and exposed tree roots along the footway and several short, steep climbs.

Beneath a whitewashed sky with hazy gray clouds, we are walking along a lofty ridge crest through an upland forest of stunted spruce and fir. An open rocky area to our left is also covered with low leafy ground cover. Several lofty peaks rise ahead in the mist. They are mostly in shadow, although parts of the scene are catching some watery sunlight.

September 6, 1983, 43 years ago today: I have always been fond of South Twin. At 4902 feet, it is one of the loftier summits in New Hampshire, and the ridge crest has an extensive alpine zone.

The sky is bright white with hazy sunshine. We are high up a mountainside looking out over the treetops down into a narrow wooded valley between us and another wooded mountain to our right. The valley curves to our right, disappearing behind the second mountain. A wooded ridge running down from our range to the right borders this side of the valley as it curves around the other mountain. Other mountain ranges cascade into the distance beyond this ridge, gradually dissolving into the mists. A dead, naked tree trunk frames the photo to our left.

Saw a black bear on my birthday eve near the #AppalachianTrail!

I was sitting by this stream,
when I saw it. When it saw me, it ran fast down the trail & then up the incline to the right at the end of this video.

It was definitely more scared of me, but I still gave it a wide berth! #RaceBrook

September 5, 1983, 43 years ago today: Following another brief stretch of hard climbing, I reached the crest of Franconia Ridge. The rugged climbs continued as I followed the ridge crest over Haystack Mountain, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette.

September 5, 1983, 43 years ago today: Today marked the end of day tripping for a couple of days. I began hiking one of the longest stretches of the Appalachian Trail unbroken by road crossings —

September 3, 1983, 43 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail briefly followed the U.S.F.S. fire road before turning onto a paved road for a while. Eventually, the trail turned off that road, passed through some fields, and reentered the woods.
