La moitié basse est occupée par une basse montagne en contre-jour, presque noire, dont on distingue les cimes des arbres.
Au-dessus, bien plus loin en arrière plan, une autre ligne de crête est visible derrière un voile rouge-orangée (en fixant l'image avec un peu plus d'attention, on distingue même au centre un mont en avant-plan qui affleure la ligne de crête, mais ses couleurs se fondent dans celles de la montagne derrière lui).
Au-dessus encore, le ciel est un dégradé du orange vers le jaune au centre haut, témoin de la présence du soleil à peine au-dessus du cadre.
