And on a personal note, I'll be hitting the faculty job market this year! My lab will develop new approaches to understand, predict, and redirect cell fate dynamics in development and cancer. I'd love to chat with folks interested in these new directions ◡̈

These efforts would not have been possible without generous support from @whiteheadinstitute.bsky.social @hhmi-science.bsky.social @chanzuckerberg.bsky.social the NIH @broadinstitute.org

This has been an incredible, collaborative effort co-led with
William Colgan in @weissmanlab.bsky.social and with Zach Smith’s group @yalepress.bsky.social @maxplanck.de
and his amazing group members JoAnne Villagrana, Jason Hou, and Minming Wang and our other wonderful collaborators

These efforts provide a foundation for understanding how cell fates emerge and change in vivo. These maps may help uncover the molecular “recipes” for making desired cell types for regenerative medicine and to understand how these programs are dysregulated to drive cancer initiation and evolution

We're already extending these efforts to environmental perturbations! In work led by Nick and Daniel, metabolic modeling and fate maps reveal how folate deficiency disrupts a transient neural metabolic state, with lasting effects on neural tube patterning. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

These data let us chart fate biases, restriction timing, and clonal contributions across diverse tissues–from the heart and endothelium to neural crest and notochord–revealing distinct developmental programs and remarkably reproducible lineage relationships across embryos.

Using PEtracer (science.org/doi/10.1126/...) we reconstructed the lineage histories of >1.4 million cells from 16 embryos sampled at half-day intervals from E7.5 to E10.0, resolving ~75% of all cell divisions across gastrulation and early organogenesis.

Comprehensive fate mapping of C. elegans transformed our understanding of development, revealing how coordinated fate decisions generate a complex organism. We take a major step toward extending this vision to mammalian development. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
