‘Tropical paradise’ atoll islands threatened by rising sea-levels could be preserved through protecting seabirds and restoring native vegetation, according to new research led by our own @nickajgraham.bsky.social of @lec-reefs.bsky.social 🏝️
Our new paper, led by @nickajgraham.bsky.social, shows that #seabirds and native vegetation can drive ecosystem processes that support atoll island climate resilience by helping them to keep pace with sea level rise 🏝️🐦
Seabirds bring in nutrients that fertilise vegetation and reef, native vegetation locks in sediments, and the island grows. Seeing atolls as integrated geo-ecological systems shows how island rewilding creates climate resilience. Nice to see this wonderful project culminate in this publication...
Here's our attempt at a video abstract of our new paper in Science Advances. Well, we enjoyed it...
