Huge congratulations to all three Nobel Laureates, and especially Peter Hegemann! π His seminal work on the green alga Chlamydomonas π¦ laid the foundation for optogenetics. Thank you for putting Chlamy in the spotlight! β¨ Proof that groundbreaking discoveries don't always come from animal models! π¬
And here goes a parallel discovery from the Santiago-Frangos lab, taking a more general comparative genomics approach and digging into NO VEIN-Tiamat biochemistry!
Fantastic discovery from @eiriklag.bsky.social and @galofir.bsky.social! Plants have a homolog of the bacterial counterphage system Tiamat called NO VEIN. When knocked down in tobacco, it shows a PVX viral multiplication phenotype!
π Biochemist Martin Jinek is the winner of the Swiss Science Prize #MarcelBenoist 2026, considered the Swiss #Nobel Prize.
He contributed to the development of molecular scissors, namely CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
