OPINION: "Flock and other companies are building an omnipresent digital dragnet without democratic consent, enabling law enforcement to track people across the country with the click of a mouse," writes Gideon Epstein of the ACLU @aclum.bsky.social. wbur.fm/4hyQqRr
“Today’s mass surveillance systems are flipping the default from law enforcement only investigating you if you do something suspicious or illegal to everyone is under suspicion and worth tracking.”
I don’t know if AI development has a 10% chance to end humanity, but I do know that AI is *already* supercharging discrimination, harming workers, and increasing utility prices. Any discussion of AI regulation that does not also address the issues *currently happening* severely misses the moment.
Over 25 municipalities in MA have rejected AI-powered mass surveillance cameras. Because the government has no business partnering with a for-profit company like Flock to track all of us.
It's not just Flock. Other companies like Axon and Motorola are also trying to invade our privacy with their automatic license plate readers (ALPRs).
