He 'emphasised the scale of the government’s investment in science and R&D, but added “there is an element in funding the defence package where we have had to find the money from the former Department for Science, Innovation and Technology budget to do that”.' Incoming haircuts then.
We all sort of know that there will be a raid on Departmental spend to fund the Defence Investment Plan, but this is the first confirmation I’ve seen of that in relation to the R&D budget. So it raises the question of how much and from where?

Universities are tearing apart the humanities, arts and social sciences. Courses are closing, jobs are disappearing, and students and staff are paying the price. At Exeter, 85% of proposed job cuts targeted these disciplines. We need university leaders who will defend education mot destroy it.
I could not agree more with you, Laura!
At what point do we admit that Higher Education is broken and that trying to do what was possible five years ago just isn’t any more? Asking for me.
'The financial crisis facing British higher education is usually explained through external pressures....But the sector’s vulnerability also reflects a less discussed problem: a model of university governance that has often rewarded expansion more readily than stewardship.'
‘The English belief that they have the oldest and firmest nation-state, or the Spanish belief that they are on the front line with Islam – go straight back to the middle ages. The medieval period lies at the origin of modern myth-making.’ Chris Wickham RIP

Death by a thousand cuts as universities revoke international offers "en masse" of prospective students from Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan to avoid losing ability to recruit international students. More job losses and course closures predicted in consequence. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
We are very sorry to learn of the death of Professor Chris Wickham. Chris was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1986.
As well as being a superb scholar, Chris played leading roles in shaping and interpreting the research and publishing environments in which historians work #Skystorians
(Shared from various people on FB) RIP Chris Wickham
Planning to apply for an ERC grant in Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences? Don't miss out on the free expert support available at British Academy reading days. Especially handy if your university is shrinking its research office or making scads of academics with grant expertise redundant. Ahem.

A very comprehensive explainer and analysis of the French student protests including their university dimensions.
Universities cannot expect researchers to take risks if they are repeatedly at risk of redundancy while losing professional services support, grappling with the gratuitous vagaries of home and international student number swings and both teaching and assessing in an age of unregulated AI.
