Cancer cells grow fast. But that comes at a cost. Rapid growth puts huge stress on systems inside cancer cells. And if that pressure builds too much, the cancer cells can become damaged or die.

New Research
Researchers uncover another potential Achilles' heel for breast cancer cellsWhat was the aim?

Cancer cells grow and divide quickly, which can cause systems inside them to become overloaded.

This creates stress that can damage the cells or cause them to die.

Our researchers wanted to understand how breast cancer cells cope with this challenge. And whether this could reveal a new weakness to target. What did they find?

They found that breast cancer cells move a protein called GPR89 to a different part of the cell, where it helps them cope with the pressure of growing quickly.

This makes cancer cells especially reliant on the GPR89 protein.

And that matters, because if researchers can block this support system, they may be able to damage cancer cells while leaving healthy cells relatively unharmed.
What does this mean?

This research uncovers a new way breast cancer cells adapt to survive.

It’s still early-stage research. But by revealing how cancer cells manage internal stress, our scientists have found
a promising new target for future treatments.

And because other cancers face similar pressures, this discovery could have implications beyond breast cancer too.

Published in The Lancet Oncology, the study found that around 69 per cent of patients were still alive after six years. The findings also highlight the importance of advanced molecular testing to identify patients at greatest risk.
