“… you have taken the world I was.”

O Small Sad Ecstasy of Love
Anne Carson

I like being with you all night with closed eyes.
What luck—here you are
coming
along the stars!
I did a road trip
all over my mind and heart
and
there you were
kneeling by the roadside
with your little toolkit
fixing something.

Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about Kristina Erny's poems since I first heard them at the Louisville Conference several years ago. So glad that we're able to publish five of them here at @swiftslitmag.bsky.social this year, and that her second collection is set to be published!

The fragment of the earth that is now me is only on its way through me. It is on its way from having been a tree, a school of fish, a terrapin, a flock of birds. It will pass through all those forms again. —Wendell Berry, from Farming, A Hand Book (1970)
