It is performative... and that is the point. Deep down, all of us need to think we are good people. Even all the sleezy scumbags have excuses. So, we all feel a need to "prove"(mostly to urselves) we are good. Which makes us do performative shit. It is still *genuine*, driven by good intentions

Yeah. TBH, I think part of it comes from a degree of naive idealism, but a part of it is also trying to find some "justice" in an unjust world. You see politicians do vile things, nothing happens, and you feel like you need to do *something* to make this world "right" - else you are a bad person.
