No. 5 of my “From the Cutting Room Floor.” This one captures almost 60% of the core thesis of the book, yet without the Antisemitic dimension of it all.

Drawing of a Black musician playing a flute or oboe. He is dressed with a hat and a long coat. To the left of him a White woman is dancing, almost completely naked. To her left a White man dressed like a clown.
A cover from the Weimar-era magazine Der Querschnitt. Despite being (supposedly) an avant-garde publication, it perfectly channels the right-to-far-right discourse on jazz: a dangerous force that made German women sexually uninhibited and turned German men into clowns and fools DER QUERSCHNITT 2 (1926]
cut because... there were simply too many of these

Stefan Ihrig’s elegantly written book synthesises the literature on Blackness in Weimar and Nazi Germany while offering some pertinent arguments. He draws connections to antifeminism and antisemitism and contextualises anti-black racism within German culture.

Thanks so much, Thomas! I really appreciate the generous words. I'm happy you like the cover—capturing that Babylon Berlin vibe was exactly what we were aiming for. Thanks for all the support!

No. 4 from my "From the Cutting Room Floor." This one features a German magazine cartoon about the Genocide of the Herero and Namaqua people.

A four-panel black and white cartoon strip. In the first panel, an African child hits a German general with a spitball. Across the next three panels, the child continues to shoot spitballs as the number of heavily armed German soldiers responding increases exponentially into a massive army.

Hi! Much more on Josephine to come from me (here, in that book, and in another project). I might get back to you on all that later...

No. 3 of my “From the Cutting Room Floor.” The first one with Josephine Baker (who became quite important in the book)
#Histodons #WeimarGermany #BlackHistory @hurstpublishers.bsky.social

Cover of a 1920s German satirical journal showing what is supposed to be Josephine Baker and Anna May Wong with a designer
It "pokes fun" at how contemporary fashions were allegedly made-"a piece of the dark continent and a handful of light from the East." It was a contribution to the raging culture wars of the late Weimar period. (spoiler: Josephine is usually portrayed as the embodiment of beauty and the New Woman par excellence)

No. 2 of my “From the Cutting Room Floor.” It looks relatively benign, but the context makes it utterly racist and lays bare the Antisemitic dimension of how Blackness in interwar Germany was often framed (more on that in the book).

I am starting a small series today showcasing some of the material I couldn’t use in my forthcoming book “Blackness in Interwar Germany.” I found hundreds of fascinating pictures and caricatures but could only use a few dozen in the book.
