@tomjennings yes! I had a whole other tangent I didn't go on about how I have in fact moved some of my creative practice to hyper local, embodied stuff

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gyOct 11, 2026, 2:03 AM

@tomjennings @glyph @jalefkowit This has always been my vision for the Fediverse. "Let's play and win our own game" was a keynote I gave in 2019.

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gyOct 11, 2026, 2:02 AM

@glyph I agree with all of this. And I think the way forward for me at least is to forge intellectual community but that seems way harder to me in 2026 than it did in 2013. Some of that is material, some of that is personal.

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gyOct 11, 2026, 2:00 AM

@tomjennings Totally agree with all of this and the historical points are well taken. I need to make community to make it happen and I guess I just don't know how to do that in 2026 (also taking into account my own despair at the state of everything). I knew how in 2013 and in hindsight I can […]

@exchgr At my year end performance reviews I should start insisting on annualized productivity. "Look at all these amazing things I did in March. Extrapolate that to the other 11 months and I'm your best employee."

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gyOct 10, 2026, 7:23 PM

@glyph @jalefkowit I don't think it's relevant to the point of the post - whether it "solves" or not, this stuff does contribute to the collapse of intellectual community.

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gyOct 10, 2026, 7:20 PM

I disagree with the author's implication that LLMs have solved software engineering, but I'm able to bracket that since the point of his post is about living in a world where "AI" (whether it works or not) contributes to the collapse of intellectual community.

Good post that gets into the futility I feel when I try to do something creative online anymore. I'm less and less motivated to do things like write a blog or build software tools. I've found myself without much of a creative community since 2020 […]

@alisynthesis it's a phrase I use! Similar to "chanced upon"

@darius.friend.camp.ap.brid.gySep 15, 2026, 6:48 PM

@alisynthesis I'm guessing they might have meant to type "lucked upon"

Ugh. I got an email from a local business I've patronized where people go to soak in hot tubs.

It appeared to be from the business, but the replyto field was to something at the url getreach.ai, which bills itself as an AI service for your business' front desk […]

Hi,

I'm forwarding the below message because it's not the kind of thing I consented to receive over email. It seems like you all are using some kind of AI front desk management service, and it decided on its own (maybe) that I need to know about a single appointment that opened up and that I'm "due for a visit" (I don't even know what that means, I just occasionally enjoy a soak at [BUSINESS]).

I find this kind of thing really disappointing from a beloved local business like [BUSINESS]. Also of note, when I click "unsubscribe", it goes to an insecure URL, which causes my browser to flag it as malware.

Basically: if you are using something called GetReach you should know that it is poorly technically implemented and is also doing things that will probably alienate customers. My career is in IT and my unsolicited professional advice is for you to stop using it. If you aren't using something called GetReach, you should figure out why and how they are spoofing your business.

Thanks,
DariusHi Darius, a [redacted] just opened up for Fri Sep 18. Call us or click Book Now to reserve this appointment.

We know you are due to come see us and thought this time might work for you. If this time doesn't work, we have other options for you over the next few days. Click here to see.

This is an unusual networking request. I'm helping someone look for roles as a trainer/instructor. They have a long professional history of creating and delivering training in a field where mistakes in training or student understanding can easily result in fatalities (of the students, or of […]

[star wars: zero company thoughts] @gastonrampersad Yes. It's a very old PC (9 years old with a 1080 GeForce) so I have all the settings set to low/medium and it's... passable performance at 30fps. Yeah there are hitches but it's never enough to take me out of the game. However I have a very […]

[star wars: zero company thoughts] I'm enjoying it greatly. In general with squad tactics games like this, I do find that I end up repeatedly running the same squad of like 4 people out of a big roster. Sometimes I change out 1 or 2 due to injuries, but I'd love to see a system like in Jagged […]

After experimenting with local LLMs for a couple years now, I'm excited to release my newest project: The Ethical Assistant! It provides all the benefits of an LLM assistant but with low energy usage, completely private, and no cost to use.

There are a lot of reasons I've been in a creative funk recently but one of them is the chilling effect where I think about the inevitable LLM plagiarism that will occur and I think, huh, do I really want to release anything publicly? I feel myself more drawn to making stuff that never goes on […]
