That’s why I wouldn’t hold your breath for a nice quick statement. This is a VRC policy problem, a moderation infrastructure problem, a complex technical problem and a community problem all at once 🤷‍♂️ It’s extremely difficult to navigate.

There’s also huge communities that are either sympathetic to AI or actively use it to some capacity and they contribute to keeping the platform alive. How do you go about balancing respect for creatives who are anti AI without alienating a giant part of the community that’s helping keep it afloat?

And even if you somehow build the perfect detection system, then what? What are the consequences? How do you deal with false positives, witch hunts and online harassment? Does VRC even have the moderation infrastructure for that?

Then come the extremely touchy questions of what actually requires something to be labelled AI? An AI texture? Geo? One asset? An entire world? Who decides where that line is?

It’s easy to simply say “just label if something is AI and let us decide if we like it!” The solution isn’t as simple as “just label” it, you would need sophisticated tools to identify models, textures, world assets, shader code etc, and not just whether AI was involved but also to what degree.

I personally wouldn’t hold your breath on getting a statement. They’re not obliged to, and there’s not much they can really say on the matter until they decide whether or not to action things.

I think that ties into my whole perspective, which is you don’t even need to witch hunt individuals to make the argument. In music, the consumer argument for human music is clear: it’s favoured overwhelmingly, even with the ai avalanche on DSPs.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think SANCTUM would get so far. What started off as a small room that I could do pop ups in 5 years ago, is now a giant boundary pushing multi-venue arts complex with its own culture, and multiple 100+ person instances running so well. Happy 5th Birthday SANCTUM 🤍
