My take on AI discourse—both in the industry and in broader society—is there's way too much focus on hypothetical science fiction stuff that would require new technological leaps to reach, if it's even possible, and not enough on the effects and implications of the technological leap that now exists

The evil AI copied itself onto the internet! No stoping it now! That's just Skynet or Ultron. Those stories rely on magic, and the audience suspends disbelief because the plot is cool. Makes no sense for AI that needs giant datacenters or live connections to them. Can we deal with reality, please?
