Thanks again to Movies Past And Present and @stanfordclark.bsky.social for giving me a platform to wallow in my obsessions. ICYMI, here we are talking THE ODYSSEY and 6 other films that led us to Christopher Nolan's latest big-screen spectacle. (We also talk TENET for a bit, which is unfortunate.)π

ICYMI: Movies Past And Present dropped its newest episode, in which I join @stanfordclark.bsky.social to discuss THE ODYSSEY, and a handful of films that led us narratively and aesthetically to Christopher Nolan's latest big-screen epic. My obsessions run a little rampant with this one, so enjoy! π

For Movies Past And Present, host @stanfordclark.bsky.social and I say plenty of things that might upset MCU #SpiderMan fans. For example, how SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING tries to ape the comedies of John Hughes without understanding the interiority of the characters that makes those films so complex.π

My friend @thegirlynerd.bsky.social and I say plenty of things about Sam Raimi's #SpiderMan trilogy that might make non-Raimi fans upset. For example, how Mary Jane Watson is one of the most three-dimensional love interests in a CBM, but you wouldn't know that if you're a toxic asshole.π

My friend @thegirlynerd.bsky.social and I say plenty of things about Sam Raimi's #Spider-Man trilogy that might make non-Raimi fans upset. For example, how bright colors and dynamic camerawork help sell the idea of comic book aesthetics and action better than 99% of superhero films today.π
My main memory of DAYS OF THUNDER is that it was the first film in DTS to play the Chinese, and when we went opening day, it absolute fucking destroyed the center channel speakers in the theater. Like literally ruined them and they had to cancel a few screenings. Good times!
