I will probably stick to the free Acrobat Reader for proofreading because the old interface is heaps faster, but I can use this alt to reduce file size, extract pages, or create Word files from PDFs to do my wizardry.

@scieditor.caOct 9, 2026, 10:04 PM

Someone made Adobe alternatives for free. I'm testing out the PDF editor now and, other than having to work in the horrid "new" Acrobat interface, it seems to work and be compatible with Acrobat! (No shenanigans like Mac Preview pulls.)

Has anyone used the other apps? getartcraft.com/apps

@library-archives.canada.ca Will you be adding a similar exclusion for periodicals and other pubs that get an ISSN instead of an ISBN?

@scieditor.caOct 9, 2026, 2:56 PM

You can't get an ISBN in Canada for works created with AI. And that means stores can't easily buy it or sell it! They permit only limited AI tasks like formatting.

There are some use cases of the LLMs (AI), but here are 10 reasons NOT to use one for editing. quadlings.com/10-reasons-t...

If we don't have the product's specs (design specifications), we must do our best to determine the preferences based on what we can see was done most often on the proof pages.

@scieditor.caOct 1, 2026, 7:04 PM

Style guides are for manuscripts, not product design. — A very common error among proofreading students is thinking that the style guide dictates how designed pages should look.

We need to know about this treatment; we need to reconcile for it. This day, like the land acknowledgments, is hardly even a beginning.

And the readings I have seen each began with a content warning; they were too much for me to read more than a skim. Even just reading 22 pages of abuse of little children who were taken by our government is a lot.

@scieditor.caSep 30, 2026, 6:58 PM

That's after I graduated university! Today the mandatory Ont. Gr 11 English curriculum centres on the abusive colonial oppression of the original cultures and peoples of this land. (I hope it goes on to celebrate those original cultures too, over the next 3 months of the course.)

Every lecture of mine does begin with a land acknowledgment. Since I teach online, a different student reads their local acknowledgment each time we meet. This week I talked about Truth and Reconciliation Day instead. 1996 was the closing of the last residential school. Nineteen ninety-six!

@scieditor.caSep 30, 2026, 6:58 PM

Since leaving school, I haven't sung the national anthem more than once (since I do not attend sports). My friend now in Gr 11 was surprised by this — and I was surprised how important teachers make the anthem, considering it is absent from the other 9/10ths of life.

@scieditor.caSep 30, 2026, 6:58 PM

Why do we need a National Day for Truth & Reconciliation? Because the top of the government page about it carries a content warning & link to mental health support. If the history of what England & Canada did to your family and culture carries a mental health warning, we should be talking about it!

#1 on the blog today: Resolved Comments go quiet in Word, but they don’t go away. Prevent others from seeing your revision trail (and disagreements!) by making sure they are deleted: eiw365.com/delete-resol...

Good thought! I saw that in a single entry. Maybe Encyclopedia Britannica? (which I did not list)

@scieditor.caSep 17, 2026, 6:06 PM

Searching newspapers showed the same preference for TOQUE (over TUQUE) in 6. The National Post 7. The Toronto Star  With about an even split in The Globe and Mail Have you, yourself, found the tuque spelling preferred in any Canadian resources?

@scieditor.caSep 17, 2026, 6:06 PM

The Language Portal of Canada spelling quiz says that "most Canadian sources prefer [the spelling] tuque." I wish they cited their sources, because I did not find that! Listing preferred spelling as O: 1. CP Style Guide 2. Canadian Encyclopedia 3. Collins Dictionary 4. CanOx 5. Gage Canadian Dict.
