UBCM is the voice of local government in British Columbia.
DRIPA represents a significant development in BC’s approach to reconciliation and Indigenous-provincial relations. UBCM's plenary session drew on local leaders, legal experts, provincial representatives and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip. The session is available in 6 videos. #UBCM26

Online harassment, personal attacks and hostile public debate are adding to the pressures elected officials deal with, yet they often don’t have access to mental health supports through their workplace.
UBCM is developing resources to ensure support is in place when it's needed.
"We're not going to get rid of the attacks on local elected people,” said Councillor Brian Frenkel, “But what we are working on is the suite of materials that will ensure that every official in British Columbia has somebody to come back to and help them through their dark times.”
RCMP policing costs make up a significant portion of local government budgets, and UBCM is calling for more input in the next RCMP service agreement. #UBCM26 youtu.be/nttzwvzuWYQ?...

Delegates will have an opportunity to consider what DRIPA means for their communities, learn where clearer engagement and information-sharing is needed, and how relationships among First Nations, local governments and the Province can support better policy outcomes.
As DRIPA continues to shape conversations in BC about reconciliation, governance, law-making and community relationships, UBCM is convening an extended plenary session at Convention to discuss the complexities around this Act and its implementation.
